RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 1509350

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:88.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/88.0

Steps to reproduce:

Looked for alternative ways to group tabs, but they are heavily dependent on addons, not intuitive enough, and runs the risk of losing all tabs when removing the addon.

Actual results:

I should be the one asking "what happened?"! Tab Grouping was an old thing that got removed for no reason!

Expected results:

Let's talk efficiency here: Bookmarks (which some Tab Grouping addons uses) are good, but only when you don't visit them on a daily basis, or when you have to visit them once in an odd moon due to research, study, debugging, etc. So, "use bookmarks to manage tabs" is not viable.
Tabs are good, because you have them open there and they open quicker than bookmarks. Even sleeping tabs loads fast. But currently there is no official reliable way to group them, and even the "🏆Recommended" addons are still a bit too iffy and not very dynamic.

How could we have Tab Grouping? I propose a few ways...

  • Approach 1: Multiple lines of tabs. a ↕ would be located on the start of the tab toolbar and when clicked would bring a drop down of the groups of tabs stored, each option having the name of the first tab in its group. Additionally there could be a preference for how many rows of tabs will be displayed simultaneously (Default 2).
  • Approach 2: Tabs of the same group are listed as one tab and can be expanded in a manner similar to a folder, but sideways! Additionally a blank group could be allowed to stay in the bar until removed manually and even be named or given an icon for better organization.
  • Alternative 3: Have an option to group tabs of the same domain. The simplest and laziest approach, but at least it is better than having none!

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Tabbed Browser' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please revert this change in case you think the bot is wrong.

Component: Untriaged → Tabbed Browser

I feel like this can be similar to what Google Chrome has. Something like this.
