windy.com worked normally in previous version with same system...eg Mint 19.3 Cinnamon

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Session Restore' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please revert this change in case you think the bot is wrong.

Component: Untriaged → Session Restore

not a session restore bug
session freezes ff requiring restart without restore

I reproduced the bug without hardware acceleration. I reproduced the bug using trouble shoot mode with no extensions and using a new profile.
The freeze appears after visiting two locations and viewing them using several forecast models...perhaps five minutes or so.
It does not happen in win 10 on the same computer or in Chrome in Mint. It did not happen using Time shift to a saved version prior to the update to 89.

Hey merlin,
I tried reproducing this issue on the latest versions of Firefox Nightly 91.0a1 (2021-06-14), beta 90.0b7 and release 89.0 but it doesn't freeze for me.

Can you test the issue while in Safe Mode? You can find helpful info here : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode .
Also a fresh new profile could help. You can find more about creating a new profile here : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-and-diagnose-firefox-problems#w_6-create-a-new-firefox-profile .
If possible, you can test this issue on the nightly build as well. Download the build from : https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/nightly/all/ .

I tried safe mode and tried a completely new profile and still got the freeze. I will try on a nightly build if I can get a second version to work without destroying the current one.

Flags: needinfo?(merlino37)

I can't reproduce the freeze in nightly 91.0a1 2021-06-14.. so I'll just wait for the regular update to Mint.
thanks for your help

Could you try the steps described in bug 1714779 comment 11 and report back? It would be very useful if we can ascertain that it's the same bug other people are experiencing.

Flags: needinfo?(merlino37)

merlino37, can you also check if beta has the problem?

I did not get a freeze using the 91.0a1 nightly build.
I did get a freeze using 89 safe mode in fresh profile with no hardware acceleration.
I haven't tried crash report -- I need to learn how to turn it on.

OK, reproduced the crash on windy.com using ff 89 and submitted a crash report as described in bug 1714779 comment 11.

merlino37, can you post the link to the crash report from about:crashes?

Flags: needinfo?(merlino37)

where is that link recorded?

Flags: needinfo?(merlino37)

merlino37, you should be able to just type about:crashes in the url bar. From there click view on the latest one and then copy & paste the url that you get here.

Flags: needinfo?(merlino37)

Did that but got "The preference breakpad.reportURL must be set.
There are crash reports in the expected directory.

Flags: needinfo?(merlino37)

There is no url on clicking the last one, only a number -1624025616-and the submit.log reads "Fri 18 Jun 2021 11:44:37 AM NDT] Crash report submitted successfully".

Ah, perhaps Mint disables submitting crash reports in their builds. Can you try the official 89.0.1 release from here http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/89.0.1/linux-x86_64/ and see if you can reproduce the hangs?

Flags: needinfo?(merlino37)

The version currently in my Mint is 89.0 not 89.0.1. The bug doesn't happen in 90.0a1. So somewhere between those versions the bug went away for me.

Flags: needinfo?(merlino37)

I'd be very interested in knowing if the hang happens in an official 89.0.1 build.

Flags: needinfo?(merlino37)

Here are the crash report id's...got them using Nightly for crashes in 89.0 at windy.com.

This is just a stab in the dark about what might be going wrong... If people could try the builds here and verify if this avoids the hangs:

https://treeherder.mozilla.org/jobs?repo=try&revision=5a8401349c38ee9fe2280f8db58dabad71062cec

I did not get a crash in 91.0a1 in windy.com.

merlino37, can you reproduce the hang with a fresh profile on 89.01? I don't even see draw_perspective_spans being called when I visit windy.com so I'm struggling to understand how this would work.

Mint hasn't updated 89.0 to 89.01 so I don't have it installed. comment 11 reproduced the bug in 89.0. I tried nightly 91.0a1 ad did not get the freeze.
It appears 89.01 doesn't have the bug, so whatever changed between 89.0 and the two mentioned seems to have eliminated it.

Flags: needinfo?(merlino37)

mint updated to ff 80.01 but it crashes as before.
