dear tiger, could u post a test url ? Also mention which specific other tabs u
are loading that causes this problem for you. This is a wfm on winxp with
1126trunk. Thx !

reporter: as Shrir mentioned, it may not be the pdf file that is causing the
issue, it may be what is included in the other windows. Can you please document
the exact steps and include the exact pages you accessed. That would help us
narrow down your issue.
I have also experienced this issue recently.
While reading slashdot, I opened several tabs (as is my usual wont) to read
articles, and then I made the mistake of doing a shift-control-click to open
this URL: http://www.research.ibm.com/journal/sj/414/forum.pdf. Mozilla hangs.
Repeatably.
My testing seems to indicate that it may matter that other tabs are still
loading when the PDF is shift-ctrl-clicked. Also, it seems that it may matter
whether the acrobat read process is already in memory. I haven't been able to
repro if Acrobat is already running.
CPU usage is 95%+.
My Acrobat reader plugin version is 5.1.0.8

I was unable to reproduce this, but am reassigning to peterl

I am running Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.2.1) Gecko/20021130
I tried to open a pdf file with right click/open in new tab. Hung. I was able to
terminate Mozilla with 3 finger salute and end task command in the task mgr.
Probably not a reasonable request to open pdf in new tab, but i did it on
auto-pilot. peterz

I'm using Mozilla 1.4 running on a Win2k Professional box. I'm also using
Acrobat 5.1. Whenever I try to load a PDF directly within Mozilla (rather than
saving it and opening it in Acrobat myself), it stops responding immediately or
within a few seconds, usually the next time I try to switch tabs or click
something. I've tried specifying the Helper app manually and telling it to ask
me every time it encounters a PDF, but to no avail.

getting similar results under win2k sp 4 with Mozilla 1.4 (2003052908) and Adobe
Reader 6.0 w. helper app for .pdf files set to Adobe Reader 6.0. Cannot even
open pdf's from Adobe's site:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/pdfs/acrruserguide.pdf
pdf files will download w. IE.

greg, please list an example URL. what version of acrobat reader? can you recreate this with a trunk build ?

I no longer see this issue, using Adobe Reader 7.0.8 and Firefox 2.0.0.3.
I first began seeing the hanging issue in Firefox 1.0. I do not know whether it persisted in 1.5, because I circumvented the issue for a long time using the "PDF Download" plug-in for Firefox.

Chris is OK, but Poul and Greg still have trouble
Poul, Greg
please check about:plugins and report, is more than one version of pdf
helper plugin is installed? (check the entire list from about:plugins)
also make sure you have the newest version
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
and if you still have a problem follow
http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=328233
Still a problem?
Poul who uses danish adobe reader 7.0.9 reports "All tabs hang until the adobe reader is killed by the job manager."
Greg had trouble with http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040.pdf?portlet=3 and wrote "I installed ver 8 and the problem is still there."

I did have one problem immediately after install of latest Acrobat Reader
but it has not re-surfaced. I'm thinking perhaps it was resolved with the
first reboot.
So far I haven't had to follow additional Adobe procedures from the Adobe link sent by Wayne Mery.
I'll continue to monitor it and go to Adobe procedure step 2+ if necessary and will advise.
Thank You,
Greg Feigel

Adobe's PDF plugin issue is usually resolved by next version, and the next version generates new problem of same symptom(crash or freeze/hang), and the new problem is resolved by next version of the next, and ...
There is no need to track problem of very old Adobe Acrobat 5, since Adove Reader 8.1 is already released.
Closing as WORKSFORME.
See dependency tree of meta Bug 336184 for problems in newer Adobe Reader plugin.
