Firefox will soon be available in the Microsoft store. We need SUMO docs that clarify the following:
- Supported platforms (Win10, Win11, no S mode support)
- How to install from the store
- What are the limitations (no 1 click set to default)
- RUnning FIrefox installed from a download and Firefox installed from the store will create 2 separate user profiles

First off, why does it not support S mode (which only allows for applications to be installed from the Microsoft Store)? In theory, shouldn't the addition of Mozilla Firefox to the Microsoft Store get around that restriction, especially since it happens to be an MSIX package?
Second off, why are there limitations when it comes to 1 click set to default? Just curious...
Also, why not overwrite Mozilla Firefox installations if somebody tries to install both versions?

I reopened this bug since https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/download-firefox-windows-microsoft-store currently says this in a warning box:
Firefox for Windows 10 in S mode is not available for download from the Microsoft Store. (doesn't this also apply to Windows 11 in S mode?
A warning about no 1-click set to default is also needed, with a link to https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-change-your-default-browser-windows#w_manually-change-your-default-browser-to-firefox-in-windows-settings-windows-11
On the 1-click default limitation, this came up in bug 1728019 comment 7.

Yes that's a good point, we should probably refer to "S mode" in general.
A warning about no 1-click set to default is also needed, with a link to https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-change-your-default-browser-windows#w_manually-change-your-default-browser-to-firefox-in-windows-settings-windows-11

Agreed, this is a known limitation on the Store build

Thanks, Romain.
I updated https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/download-firefox-windows-microsoft-store to change the warning to Windows in S mode and I added this warning on setting the default browser:
When Firefox is installed from the Microsoft Store, changing your default browser to Firefox must be done manually, in Windows Settings.

Maybe Romain or someone else has more information but you have a good point. I looked at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-10-and-windows-11-in-s-mode-faq-851057d6-1ee9-b9e5-c30b-93baebeebc85 and it says this for both Windows 10 and Windows 11 under Can I set Google Chrome or Firefox as my default web browser when I'm using Windows <10 or 11> in S mode?
(quote)
No. When you're using Windows <10 or 11> in S mode, Microsoft Edge is always the default web browser, and Bing is the default search engine. But you can access other browsers and search engines while in S mode. You can download any browser available in the Microsoft Store in Windows, and you can navigate to any other search engine website.
If you want to download a browser (or any other application) that's not in the Microsoft Store, ... <snip>

Details are on bug 1725481 but short is that currently under S-mode, attempts to load the Widevine libraries will fail due to a lack of store signatures (Microsoft requires all DLL files loaded by an application be signed by a Microsoft's Store certificate though Widevine is not present on the store). This implies users would not have access to DRM'd content (some of Youtube, Netflix, Prime vidfeo and lots more) - we decided to prevent Firefox installs in S mode rather than giving a Firefox experience that will not satisfy users on that platform. Currently we recommend users disable S mode in order to install Firefox.
