People
(Reporter: fare+mozilla, Assigned: sfraser_bugs)
Details
User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.21; Mac_PowerPC)
Build Identifier: Navigator 0.5
Using either "stable" 0.5.0 or latest build, whenever I try to change fonts, I get a nice font
selection menu, but there seems to be no way to actually do anything with whichever font
I select with it (no "OK" button of any kind, no cut&paste, no drag&drop). However,
sometimes, for an undertermined reason, some font will be changed to one I selected
before, or one of my favorite fonts will disappear, or the fonts will be reset to Lucida 13pt,
or some font will show with the wrong name in the menu, etc.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Go to Preferences > Appearance > Fonts menu
2. Try to actually change a font
Expected Results:
Given me a way to do something with the font I select.
Not get mixed up with favourite fonts.

Just to confirm: are you seeing the OS-supplied fonts panel? When you pick a
font in that panel, does it update the font sample in the prefs panel?

I don't know what you mean by "OS supplied fonts panel".
Within Navigator, I invoke the Preferences > Appearance > Fonts menu, which has
a look unlike what I've seen before, with a big round button to the right of a
font that opens a nice font selection popup. The design is nice, but it's not
functional. The popup has no confirmation button; sometimes there is a side
effect on the font in the menu, but the effect is not the desired one and not
reproducible (maybe it's "just" some font being changed but the menu not updated
accordingly). I don't know where the inconsistency between what the user sees
and what he ought to see comes from (bad propagation of information in some
Model-View-Controller pattern?), all I see is the end-user bug.
Note: in case that matters, I'm using OS 10.2.

I'm confused too. There is no 'Preferences > Appearance > Fonts menu'; it's a
tab, not a menu.
> nice font selection popup
this is the "OS-supplied fonts panel".
> The popup has no confirmation button
That's because changes you make there take effect immediately (just like then
you use the same panel in TextEdit).
> sometimes there is a side effect on the font in the menu
You mean in the font preview panel (where it shows the font name and size)?
> but the effect is not the desired one and not reproducible
Can you be more specific about how the outcome differs from your expectations?

Ok, so it's a tab.
When I select a font in the popup, the font in the preview panel within the tab
doesn't change. If I insist, I get various side effects: sometimes, I got the
current font changed to one of my earlier selections; another time, I got
everything reset to Lucida 13 points (which I never ever selected).
Maybe I should watch some window open with the renderer, to see if the font is
selected despite the preview panel being horribly wrong -- I'll try tomorrow
when I have the computer once again.

Need precise steps to reproduce this.

You could be selecting the font family from the font panel without selecting a
style (which is ignored anyway). See bug #184102 and bug #175924. I think this
is a dupe of those bugs, especially #184102.
