User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:99.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/99.0
Steps to reproduce:
Contacts switched over to the new Google Chats (non-Hangouts) system appear as offline even when they are online and Thunderbird users also do not show up as online contacts for users in the new Google Chat system.
Expected results:
Contacts on the new Google Chat (non Hangouts) system should appear as online and Thunderbird users should show up as online for Google Chat users
I don't know, though Thunderbird could already detect the online status of Google Hangouts/Chat (though that might need adjusting based on the switchover to new Google Chat - see other separate bug).
Sorry, I thought this was a comment to another submission. I don't know the answer, but Thunderbird has been able to detect it for Google Hangouts/Chat so far and that still works for now, but not for contacts fully using the new Google Chat.

Unfortunately if they're not propagating this information to their XMPP gateway then I doubt there's much we can do. :(
AS far as I understand, everything will switch over to the new Google Chat in the near future. Maybe someone can reach out to Google over this to enable access via Oauth? The login does work...

Bug 1238631 added support to Thunderbird to log into GTalk with OAuth2. This was landed in 101, so should be available to you if you're on beta.
Right, it is available to me! But it will become pointless very soon if everybody shows as offline....
Google Talk deprecation is now officially set for June 16th: https://support.google.com/talk
Any chance there could be some sort of higher level engagement with Google about allowing some sort of access through Oauth? Also, here is something somebody is working on for Pidgin: https://github.com/EionRobb/purple-googlechat

The issue isn't the authentication layer (as of latest Thunderbird betas we already use OAuth2). It is that they seem to be removing their XMPP gateway. (Although this has been announced a bunch of times before.)
Google Chat uses a proprietary API of some sort, and our intention is to support open standards in Thunderbird. Hopefully Thunderbird will support chat protocols via extensions again in the future (I think this is currently blocked by bug 1227973).
