VA-API acceleration on my system broke recently and videos no longer play accelerated (no Video use in intel_gpu_top and 4K videos cause RDD to consume large amounts of CPU).

The system is a hybrid with iris as the main driver and nouveau as the secondary. I do not (consciously) use the NVIDIA GPU, i.e. don't set DRI_PRIME.

mozregression identified bug 1770407.

Note that the surfaceless platform defaults to the nouveau driver, all others default to iris.

Applying mesa commit 314b52e5 as mentioned in bug 1771861 comment 4 didn't help.

I've filed a new bug because my setup doesn't quite fit bug 1771861 (the reporter uses DRI_PRIME) or bug 1771898 (the reporter uses the proprietary nvidia driver).

Using bwrap --dev-bind / / --dev-bind /dev/null /dev/dri/renderD129 as suggested in mesa issue 6588 does restore acceleration, so this might be a duplicate of bug 1771898 even though the proprietary driver is not involved.

I think Firefox really needs to be explicit in its device selection for the surfaceless backend, as EGL_DEFAULT_DISPLAY is essentially random, see mesa issue 6588 comment 2.

So as heftig found out there is an extension to force a specific device (EGL_EXT_explicit_device), however it's quite new and also states:

Using EGL_EXT_explicit_device with EGL_MESA_platform_surfaceless is functionally identical to EGL_EXT_platform_device.

So we indeed should replace EGL_MESA_platform_surfaceless with EGL_EXT_platform_device. That one should also be supported everywhere where EGL_MESA_platform_surfaceless is supported.

EGL_EXT_platform_device looks interesting but I don't see how to use it.

The whole bunch of related extensions (GL_EXT_device_base EGL_EXT_device_enumeration EGL_EXT_device_query) is a bit cryptic to me.

I assume you would use eglQueryDevicesEXT to get all devices, inspect the devices and pick the one you want, which should be the same device as the main process uses.

There's EGL_EXT_device_persistent_id which adds some API to solve exactly this problem of transferring a device selection from one process to another, but it doesn't seem to be supported by Mesa. I guess you would have to use the device path from EGL_EXT_device_drm or EGL_EXT_device_drm_render_node instead.

I assume you would use eglQueryDevicesEXT to get all devices, inspect the devices and pick the one you want, which should be the same device as the main process uses.

I'll try to give this a go. Using https://cgit.freedesktop.org/mesa/demos/tree/src/egl/opengl/eglinfo.c as inspiration as that's afaik the version shipped in e.g. Fedora.

Here's a simple example how to create a EGL display from a device matching a given render node - /dev/dri/renderD128 in this case. Inspired by the test program from bug 1731480 comment 15.

On multi-GPU setups, EGLs "surfaceless" platform may pick the wrong device.
There is a very recent extension which solves this issue,
EGL_EXT_explicit_device, however it states:

Using EGL_EXT_explicit_device with EGL_MESA_platform_surfaceless is
functionally identical to EGL_EXT_platform_device.

Thus, if we previously detected a render node device, use
EGL_EXT_platform_device to create the display in headless scenarios.

For all other cases, notably ARM SOCs where
EGL_DRM_RENDER_NODE_FILE_EXT is not yet availble, continue to
fall back to the surfaceless platform.

Note: this patch also does some cleanups. Most importantly,
EGL_MESA_platform_surfaceless is a client extension, not a
display extension. The check for it must thus always have failed.
Instead, check for it before trying to use it when creating the
display.
Also remove the rendundant redifinition in GLDefs.h - it's
already included in the upstream EGL headers.
