User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:102.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/102.0

Steps to reproduce:

Checked mail

Actual results:

Nvda screen reader did not read the progress bar with sound

Expected results:

Usually the progreess bar is visible to nvda so that I hear sound with messagee on progress. In 91x this was fine, so either this doesn't show or its a different bar. I can read the bar if I tab about with messages coming in but it usually will beep as thee progress bar fills to tell me its status.

This is to just let you know that this is reported on the nvda bug tracker.
https://github.com/nvaccess/nvda/issues/13941
So in case either side needs to link to that one.
I finally had time to split this off from the statusbar issue I have been having which seems to be well on the way to being fixed at least from the comments I have read.

Summary: incoming messages progress bar does not display with sound → incoming messages progress bar does not display with sound (using nvda)

Henry, noting NVDA bug 13941, do you think that this is a Thunderbird issue?

bug 1777184(In reply to Thomas D. (:thomas8) from comment #2)

Henry, noting NVDA bug 13941, do you think that this is a Thunderbird issue?

It is hard to tell. As mentioned in bug 1777184 comment 4

Announcing the progress bar seems to be controlled by an NVDA preference. As far as I can tell, there were no changes made to the progress bar within the status bar between version 91 and 102. So I don't have much of an idea what caused the change for you.

This bug here and bug 1777805 could have the same cause. The only change I am aware of in the status bar as a whole between 91 and 102 is the addition of the "show spaces toolbar" button and bug 1754084.

Ultimately someone with a microsoft Windows machine needs to test this with NVDA. @thomas8, do you have NVDA installed, I think it is license-free to use? Set up the NVDA preference to indicate the progress, see "Progress bar output" in https://www.nvaccess.org/files/nvda/documentation/userGuide.html, and test that you have it working in esr 91. Then test before and after the patch from bug 1777184 to see whether that addressed it and bug 1777805.

I've got NVDA installed and progress bar sound is default. I've digged into this some days back for some time, but it's not easy to reproduce as most message download checks only take a split second. Also, tbh, having everything I touch on screen read out aloud is distracting me beyond limit.
I did run into situations where progress was sounding in 91, but not in 102 - in fact, I've seen POP Bug 1777765 which looks like one possible cause of this bug. I also confirmed that bug 1777805 is still happening (even after bug 1777184) - another possible cause.

Before spending more time on this, I think we should first fix bug 1777765 and bug 1777805.

sm.everiss:
What is the account type of your affected accounts (where NVDA screen reader did not read the progress bar with sound), POP3 or IMAP or both?

Depends on: 1777765, 1777805

Pop3 is my protocol I use.
This is only on incoming.
Its worth noting that there are a lot of interface changes that a lot on the lists I am on do not like from spaces toolbar to other things not mentioned.
All I know are there are a lot that upgraded and then quickly went back to 91.x though I really don't subscribe to that at least.
