User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:103.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/103.0
Steps to reproduce:
Automatic upgrade TB 91.12.0 to 102.1.2
Actual results:
After the automatic upgrade TB 91.12.0 to 102.1.2, TB no longer works. After the upgrade, TB starts normally, but as soon as the opening screen is displayed, TB can no longer be operated. The message no response appears. It is no longer possible to continue working with the old profile. No incompatible add-ons are installed.
After reinstalling 91.12.0 and deleting the compatibility.ini file, TB works as usual again. The OS is Windows 11.

Hello,
the problem is that it is no longer possible to operate Thunderbird after the upgrade, no response.
Even if I start the troubleshooting mode with the shift key, TB hangs up.

I also start the upgrade in the troubleshooting mode, but that doesn't help either.
Perhaps I should mention that TB's profile is not in the default directory. But that is the case with all my computers. On my notebook, for example, the upgrade has been working since the first version.

What's about of these many (40) prefs-xx.js in the profile folder? Is it possible to delete them?

Hello,
the problem seems to be caused by my profile. If I create a new profile under version 91.12.0, then upgrading to 102.1.2, TB works fine in the new version and profile. If I then copy my old profile into the new profile folder, I have the same error again.

The second time I tried, I copied my old profile into the new profile, but without the profile.ini and all the prefs-xx.js files. Now it works, even after I copied the files from the now functioning profile into the original (emptied) profile folder.

Thunderbird only uses the 'prefs.js' file.
For some unknown reason Thunderbird has been recreating the 'prefs.js' ever since version 78* came out. You are not unique, it is very common and no one seems to know why it occurs.
Whilst using version 91.9.1 I also got a 2 new 'prefs.js' files within a couple of hours of each other size 78 kb and for some unknown reason. I did not get any more as aI updated until 102. When I installed 102* , it created a new one of a slightly larger size 91kb.
When it creates a new 'prefs.js' file, the previously used one gets a number eg: 'prefs-1.js'. The one with the highest number being the last/previously used.
There is no point in keeping any that have a size of zero.
It is worth keeping the one with the highest number providing it has a good size. I h ave helped people rescue address books because they had the data in a previously used 'prefs-x.js' file. So useful as a backup in some cases.
So if you have 40 of them and 'prefs-40.js' has a good size:
delete eg: 'prefs-1.js' - 'prefs-39.js'
Then rename 'prefs-40.js' as 'prefs-1.js'
There are occasions when the 'prefs,js' file has lost data - then Thunderbird does not know about any mail accounts or perhaps address books.
In those situations, it is worth trying:
rename 'prefs.js' with a really high number eg: 'prefs-100.js'
Then rename the one with highest number and good size back to 'prefs.js'.
This often fixes the weird case of missing accounts and address books.
All of the above would need to done after exiting Thunderbird.
