Steps to reproduce:

  • Opened Thunderbird, layout Classic, clicked on a new message in the messages list, ordered by Date DESC
  • While reading message, a new message appeared in the list
  • Hit the Reply button on the message I was reading

(v112.0b1)

Actual results:

The compose window opened, and the message I was replying to was the message above the one I was reading in the messages list

Expected results:

The compose window opens with the message I was reading as the message to which I was replying.

Please post your results when 112.0b3 becomes available in the next couple days.

The issue persists in 112.0b3

For consistency I'm adding that the issue persists in 112.0b4

We received a report through the tb-beta mailing list that something similar happens with delete (wrong message will be deleted).

Even though this ticket is after other similar ones, I'm leaving this one open because there's more activity here and I'm marking older tickets as duplicates. The first part of Bug #1823124 is a dupe of this bug.

Elizabeth,
I see you've postsed in https://thunderbird.topicbox.com/groups/beta/Tc6826d1a64caa215-M5771b4fb6fa3a90769f3604f
Do we have enough information/understanding to resolve this?

I've not seen this, but I don't use descending date.

Yes, we have enough information to resolve this. Most likely the indexes on each message are not being updated when new mail comes through. Thank you!

Taking this, with permission, as I think I've got to the root of the problem.

It appears that this hack is (a) unnecessary now (probably fixed by other changes to do with
deleting messages), and (b) the cause of bad selection in about:message, leading to the wrong
message being used when reply or delete is clicked in the message pane.

nice!
