User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.0.1) Gecko/20020830 Build Identifier: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/releases/mozilla1.2.1/Red_Hat_8x_RPMS/xft/ japanese characters/text appears as squares with ascii code within test was done with older mozilla as <1.2 , works problem also present with 1.2beta Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: go to a japanese written web page Actual Results: page loads but no readable text Expected Results: displays correct japanese kanjis
Can you attach a screenshot?
Also can you tell us where did you download the build? cause it a little confused me with the user agent showing 1.0.1 and build ID is 1.2.1.
Attached image a screenshot showing the problem (deleted) —
here's a screenshot showing the problem I used the 1.2 and 1.2.1 Xft (I love antialias) to test the case but as it failed for both reverted back to the 1.0.1 version (I really needed to see the pages correctly at this moment) the 1.2* Xft builds where from the mozilla official FTP I used the rpm -Uvh command to upgrade from 1.0.1 to 1.2* Xft .. is there something to do, like erase the old .mozilla or such when upgrading to the 1.2 series ?
I went to that mozilla ftp site, but failed to install the build. Seems I have to remove the my old mozilla build in order to install such kind of build. Since I don't have a linux RH8.0 by meself so I have to using a borrow machine. Reassign to blizzard@mozilla.org

Do you have the ttfonts-ja package installed? Those builds are for RH8.0 since that's the only properly-configured Xft system I know of so far.
The reason that I ask is that the little boxes all have valid numbers in them. That means that the characters aren't being mapped to unknown characters.

That was it ! The ttfonts-ja package wasn't installed for some reason (I tought I was), after installing it went all right. Shouldn't there be some kind of warning or announce so far to tell people to verify if they have the ttfonts packages when such case happens ? anyway thanks all for your help

Mozilla doesn't have any specific knowledge of what's installed on a system and what's not. It wouldn't be too hard to add on a platform by platform basis, though.
Mark as verified for this display garbled issue.
