+++ This bug was initially created as a clone of Bug #1820700 +++

In version 102, selecting a row that represents a thread and expanding a thread/collapsing a thread are independent.

In version 115, selecting a row now expands the thread and clicking onto the thread arrow has no effect, the thread can't be collapsed again. You can now only collapse threads with are not selected.

Note that there seems to be some confusion in bug 1820700 comment #14.

In version 115, selecting a row now expands the thread and clicking onto the thread arrow has no effect, the thread can't be collapsed again. You can now only collapse threads with are not selected.

I can't reproduce this.
The expanding and selecting of the entire thread only happens if the click is triggered on top of the "thread" icon of the message row.
Clicking on the row anywhere else it doesn't expand the thread.

Nonetheless, even if the selection and expansion happens via the click on the "thread" icon, it's still possible to select single message or click the chevron to collapse it.

I can't reproduce the reported issues.
Magnus? Wayne?

Attached video threads.mp4 (deleted) —

The video shows that the thread arrow can be used to expand/collapse the thread. This stops working when the row is selected. Selecting the row will expand the thread.

Sorry, I've just noticed: mail.operate_on_msgs_in_collapsed_threads at false.

115.0a1 (2023-05-31) (32-bit)

Summary: Can't collapse thread if row is selected → mail.operate_on_msgs_in_collapsed_threads at false resulting in: Can't collapse thread if row is selected

What is the purpose and usefulness of operate_on_msgs_in_collapsed_threads being set to false?
I'm not being aggressive or confrontational, it's a real curiosity.

Is that so if an action is triggered on a closed thread it's child messages are not affected by it?
It seems very unintuitive and sort of an outdated paradigm.
Kinda like expecting to select a folder to delete and not wanting to delete the files inside that folder.

Dupe of Bug 1832383!?

It is indeed

Dupe of Bug 1832383!?

Oops, sorry.

... it's a real curiosity.

Well, TB is a collection of oddities used by minorities. Why would you use POP3 and then only download headers or messages up to 50K? That's for the people on expensive satellite internet.

mail.operate_on_msgs_in_collapsed_threads is actually false by default in mailnews, only TB's prefs set it to true. You may want to read bug 448288 and bug 454829 (should be closed since it was implemented) for background. As I understand it, some people don't like the summary view and setting the pref to false is the only way to disable it.
