This is impractical--especially if I've already written some text. Communicator 4.x used to have some UI element in the composition window for choosing your format; when you changed the setting, it would convert your current text to the new format. Can we get that back? Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce:
same problem if starting compose window from a newsgroup where default is plaintext. When changing account to a mail account, the mail cannot be rendered in html, even if that is the default for that account.
From bug 167588: "you can Shift+Click the Compose button in mail/news to compose a rich text email (html) instead of plain text (and the opposite way around if you are defaulting to html mail)" Resolving as duplicate since that feature is not at all obvious. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 167588 ***

This is not a duplicate. What I am asking for is a way to switch *after* starting to write the message. Is that feasible?
I agree with John - this is not a duplicate. This (bug 186017) is for changing plain text/html DURING writing an email. Bug 167588 is for deciding between plain text/html BEFORE starting writing an email. Outlook has this feature - At work I often use it when writing a reply to an html email, to make it into a plain text reply.
