i think this was caused by the landing of bug 86640. seen on win2k, linux rh8.0
and mac 10.2.3 (both moz and comm trunk).

1. click on a link for a file where you do *not* have an OS-associated
application to launch that file type. i have several in
http://hopey.mcom.com/tests/helper-apps/ (sorry, internal only; external test
sites welcomed.) the point here is to add a mimetype to the list in the Helper
Applications preference panel.

2. when the helper application dialog appears fill in the "Open it with"
textfield with an application's path --it doesn't matter whether you type it
directly into the textfield, or use the file picker via the "Choose" button.

3. click OK (btw, it also doesn't matter whether or not you've selected the
"Always show this dialog..." checkbox in the helper app dlg). let the app launch
--you could've used a bogus app in step 2; again, the point is to add an entry
in the pref panel.

4. now, open up the Preferences window and select the Helper Applications panel
(under Navigator).

5. click on (highlight) the added mimetype in the "File types" list box.

results: observe how the application name is missing from "When encountered:
[Open these files with ]"

will attach screenshot soon. the workaround is a bit odd, to actually display
the application name:

6. click on the Edit button.

7. in the resulting dialog, you don't need to anything except click the OK
button (hitting Cancel isn't enough).

8. reselect the mimetype in the "File types" listbox. now the app name is
displayed under "When encountered".

note: this doesn't seem to be a problem if i add a mimetype directly in the pref
panel (via the "New" button).
