User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; Windows NT 5.0; T312461)
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.2.1) Gecko/20021130
The attachment indicator (paper clip) on the main window (which shows the list
of messages in a mail box) is not shown until a message is opened. By opening,
this can either be single clicking on the message if the message pane is not
hidden (ie the message is opened in the message pane); otherwise opening the
message by double clicking (and opening an individual message window). After
either of these actions, the attachment indicator is then shown afterwards even
if mozilla is restarted, unless the mail box is changed externally. Ie a local
folder scenario where the mail folder can be changed outside of mozilla,
attachment indicator is not shown when the message is new, shown after the
message has been opened, and not shown again when the mail box changes
(externally to mozilla) until it is "opened".
The local folder (that changes externally) scenario i think is just an
extension of the problem that mozilla does not detect a message having an
attachment until the message is opened.
The bug has been testing on my setup of mozilla 1.2.1 on w2k with local
folders, as well as mozilla 1.3a on w2k using POP3 to get mail. In the latter
case, once a message has been opened and detected to have (an) attachment(s),
the paper clip indicator is shown even through mozilla restarts and new mail
arriving.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Receive mail containing attachment with message pane hidden
2. Notice there is no attachment indicator (paper clip) in main window
3. Open message (either by viewing message in message pane or opening message
in a new window
4. Notice attachment indicator is now shown for the message
Actual Results:
Attachment indicator (paper clip) was not shown on the main window when a new
(unread) message is received. The attachment indicator was shown after the
message has been opened.
Expected Results:
It was expected that the attachment indicator is shown as soon as the message
is received, as opposed to when it is opened.
With text mailers like mutt or elm, you can (mostly) tell if there is an
attachment by the size of the mail, but with mozilla, size is not shown so the
attachment indicator has to be relied on. In Outlook, the attachment indicator
is shown as soon as the message is received.
The problem is worsen in the case of local folders that change externally, the
netscape index has to be rebuilt everytime the local folder is changed
(externally), thus every message then become "unread" thus with no attachment
indicator.
