Details
Mailnews wants to move to the next unread message after every page scroll
(spacebar while reading) with general.smoothScroll enabled. If the message
is the last unread message in the folder the "Advance to next new message in
<some other folder>?" dialog box is displayed. Click cancel, type <space> again
and after it scrolls to the next page of message body the dialog box appears again.

If there's more than one new message in the folder then the single page scroll
ends up scrolling through the entire message and automatically moves to the next
message after scrolling one screenful.
