Details
(Keywords: regression)
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X; en-US; rv:1.2.1) Gecko/20021130
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X; en-US; rv:1.2.1) Gecko/20021130
As a developer on Mac OS X, I enter some local domain names into my NetInfo,
Apple's replacement for a Hosts file. The last version of Mozilla that will
resolve these addresses (any of them) is 1.2.1 (Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC
Mac OS X; en-US; rv:1.2.1) Gecko/20021130).
I use Mozilla for all my testing and some deployment, but cannot do so if the
locally designated hostnames are not reachable.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Enter a custom "machine" (hostname) into NetInfo on Mac OS X
2. Try to reach that domain name in Mozilla, any version later than 1.2.1
3. Get an error message about not finding the domain in a popup alert window.
Actual Results:
I got the error mentioned in step 3
Expected Results:
Connected to the domain name specified

Is this a Mach-o vs CFM issue?

It would be easy to test this by trying to reach one of those local domains
using a command-line tool like curl, ping etc. If those work, then we have a bug.
I am able to reach the domains by IE, curl, ping, etc. I'm actually still able to reach them
using Mozilla 1.2.1 (as noted) but not any more recent versions...

related to bug 194476?
I can investigate this further next week, if darin or gordon need me to.
Summary: Cannot reach local domain names → DNS: Cannot reach local domain names in netinfo
It does NOT work on:
Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.3) Gecko/20030312
Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.4a) Gecko/20030401
-----------------------------------------
It WORKS on:
Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X; en-US; rv:1.2.1) Gecko/20021130
Sam
Sam: That sounds like a likely cause...
Let me ask you this, does editing your hosts file work? I know they aren't the
same thing, but I want to get a complete picture of what works and doesn't.
Keywords: regression
Summary: DNS: Cannot reach local domain names in netinfo → DNS: Cannot reach local domain names in netinfo (Mach-O)
I have tried editing the host file at /etc/hosts and Mozilla still cannot find the local...
servername.

How are you defining these machines in NetInfo?
(a) have you modified the default lookup to read a hosts file as well
(b) did you create a new blank entry under the machines "folder"
(c) did you duplicate an existing (and working) machine such as localhost and
then modify its "name"
If it was b or c can you please provide all the property/value pairs for one of
the domains that is not working?
To note: I've added many domains via method C and never had a problem. Currenly
running 2003041008 & OS X 10.2.5 but i've had this setup for quote some time
through many builds of both OS X and Moz

Sam, it might be worthwhile to know what OS X version you're using.

Great read, Greg... I'm still using Mac OS 10.1.5 because of compatibility issues with Perl
modules, etc.
I have another Mac with 10.2.[something], and I can try this on that machine later today,
maybe.
In response to the previous question, I used NetInfo, copied the localhost entry, changed
the IP to 192.168.1.100, changed the name to "local.samcorl.com" and saved my
changes. I've done the same for a dozen or more hosts on this machine (OS 10.1.5) and
it works fine. Just not with Mozilla after 1.2...

Maybe someone who edits the OS list could change "Mac OS X" to Mac OS 10.1 and
10.2. ?
