I believe it's very important and convenient feature to edit _EXISTING_ emails.
This way you can annotate/track changes/whatever. It's very convenient. It's a
good idea to draw user's editions in some default style which will be easily
distinguished. Edits should be limited to adding new text or
adding/deleting/modifying user-entered text, _NOT_ deleting parts of the
original email.

It would be nice to be able to edit any message by deleting old/duplicated
information or adding notes, such as what can be done with MSOutlook (and
others). For example, I'd like to be able to type a few words in the preview
pane and save the changes. Mozilla does have the "Message/Edit Message as New"
option but this creates a new message (a workaround if it's saved in the same
folder and the old message is deleted....).
Yes, this is an excellent feature that I would like to see in Mozilla mail.
I subscribe to a large number of email lists that are pretty active, and I like
to archive messages. A very large percentage of messages contain extraneous text
(not attachments!) that wastes a lot of disk space. Many posters evidently don't
care if their messages include 10 previous messages. I would really like to be
able to remove the extra stuff to save my disk space.
Another problem with these messages is that they use HTML formatting, which
wastes even more space. Sometimes it makes sense to have it, and sometimes it
doesn't. And some (many) people send both plain and HTML text. I would like this
RFE to include being able to remove all rich formatting from the message and
leave plain text only.

I'm voting for this; it's a very important feature.
However I disagree with comment #1 which says that the original email shouldn't
be editable, for a few reasons.
First of all, it's an artificial restriction, and those are almost always a bad
idea.
Second, what's the point of a feature called "edit *existing* mail" if it
prevents you from, well, editing existing mail?
Third and finally, the main reason I'd like to see this functionality
implemented is that many listservs (ridiculously) send you emails containing
your own password. This is arguably unnecessary, and obviously a security risk,
but in any event it happens often if you subscribe to mailing lists. So
currrently (with Eudora) whenever such an email arrives, I edit it, delete the
password, save and close it. I would like to be able to do the same thing with
Mozilla.

What does it mean that the "Assigned To" field on this bug says
"mscott@netscape.com (Scott MacGregor (gone))"? Gone, as in, on vacation? Or
no longer working on Mozilla? I noticed that he is excluded from the email list
when this bug gets a new comment...
This must be the man who works on Thunderbird.

This is an important feature to have. It should also be very simple to add,
since it already exists for messages in the Drafts folder. Is anybody working on
this for Mozilla 1.7?

this would also be useful for people who use mails as notes (have you ever sent yourself a mail just to have some information stored in your mail client?).
That way, you could edit your 'notes'.

howdy y'all,
you may want to take a look at this extension ...
- Headers ToolsLight: edit Subject, Sender, Full source etc
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=2300561
it replaces the old headertools extension and does what this [and several other] bugs here request.
take care,
lee

Do you see any reason to not dup this to bug 254739?
