If you create a mail folder that ends in a . (ie, "My Company, Inc.") filter
some messages into a subfolder of it, and then quit and restart Mozilla, the
folder appears to be empty. If you rename the mail folder to not end in a .,
exit, rename the corresponding .sbd folder on disk to match the new name, and
restart the contents appear again.
