I've Acrobat Reader version 6.
Every time I open some pdf stuff in my Mozilla 1.4 (this happens for every file
independend of the content) the Browser is going to crash when I want to close
the pdf and simply browse to another website.
It must be sait that I've had Acrobat Reader 5 before and there were no problems.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. On My System:
2. have Acrobat Reader 6.0 Plugin
3. Open a pdf file and move somwhere else
Actual Results:
Mozilla crashes
Expected Results:
Mozilla should not crash

My results (on a Win XP Pro system) are slightly different (but close).
No problems with Acrobat Reader 5.0 and Mozilla 1.3.
Acrobat Reader 6.0 and Mozilla 1.3: PDFs load and view fine, but attempting to
leave (either by closing the tab or clicking the back button) crash the browser.
Acrobat Reader 6.0 and Firebird 0.6: same.
Acrobat Reader 6.0 and Mozilla 1.4 (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1;
en-US; rv:1.4) Gecko/20030624): same if I try to leave the PDF and then click
any browser button. However, if I close tab or hit back, immediately use the
launch bar shortcut to crash down to the desktop, wait a while (20 secs. to 1
minute) and then go back to the browser, things work fine -- the PDF and its tab
(if appropriate) are gone, browser works fine. Thereafter, subsequent PDFs
cause no difficulty. Note that this leaves the Reader process in memory at
exit. If I open Acrobat Reader 6.0 first, then start the browser and browse a
PDF, there's also no problem. So it appears that the problem only occurs when
the reader program is loaded for the first time by the browser.

well, it must be said, that the first time when I was reporting this, I had
simply installed Acrobat Reader 6 over 5 without deinstallation.
Now I ve uninstalled them, cleaned my system and the behavior is exactly the
same as reportet by Paul above.

Bug 214137 seems to be close to this bug.
I experienced hang problem sometimes until 20030729-trunk/Win-Me but hang
seems to have disappeared on 2003073110-trunk/Win-Me.
I found that already added file types are not diaplyed on "Preference/Helper
Applications" by 20030729-trunk/Win-Me build but they are displayed properly by
2003073110-trunk/Win-Me build.
These file types were saved in mimeTypes.rdf in profile directry when unknown
mime_type/file_type was detected in the past.
I guess that hang/crash was caused by this inproper mimeTypes.rdf handling by
Mozilla in conjunction with following Acrobat Reader 6's problems:
(1)Bug 147309 Ignoring Adobe Acrobat reader settings for "Display PDF in Browser"
(2) Bug 204017 adobe acrobat plug-in crashed when browser tab closed but
acrord32.exe still running
What will happen with 20030731-trunk build or newer?

I think it IS the same Bug.
Question: Why are these too bugs still remain as "unresolved?"

What will happen with 20030731-trunk build or newer?

I had unchecked next two internet option settings of Acrobat Reader 6 on
previous report.
(1) Internet / Optimize for Web browsing
(2) Internet / Download in background
(Sorry for uncertain English option name. I use Japanese Acrobat Reader 6)
After checking of both options (All internet settings are checked) followed by
re-boot, hang/crash occurred again on 2003073110-trunk.
Effective workaround in this case was "starting Acrobat Reader 6" only as you said.
When I unchecked above 2 options again and re-booted, hang problem disappeared.
Tab of PDF was closed successfully although unexpected Acrord32 task process
still existed even after tab was closed.
I do not know which Acrobat Reader 6 option affects on problem yet.
Is this an effective workaround at your environment?
(Note : reboot seems to be required after changing Acrobat Reader settings.)

On My two systems I did as you've described above.
The first time, adobe acrobat reader crashed. The second time (and also the next
times) the behaviour was the same as before.
In Internet Explorer adobe works correctly (closing and opening goes fast, and
there aren't any crashes).
On whatever (Mozilla or acrobat) this is based on: it seems that Adobe Acrobat
reader 6 is no more able to work together with mozilla.
(For me a problem since I'm a physics student that has many pdf documents to
read and I don't want to use five different Browsers, e-mail clients, Html
Editors and so on...)

I would just like to confirm that this bug exists on my setup. Mozilla 1.5b
(Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.5b) Gecko/20030827) with
Adobe Acrobat Reader Version 6.0. When loading a PDF inside of Mozilla and then
closing the tab that it was opened in, Mozilla will hang for about four minutes
on it's own. Closing down the Acroread32 process manually seems to shorten that
time somewhat, but not significantly.
Thanks for looking into this.

This freeze problem exists on 1.5b, Win Me, Reader 6.0, previous version of
Acrobat having been uninstalled. The problem has persisted from the last two
builds of Mozilla with the Win Me.

I am still seeing this problem with Firebird 0.7 (20030925) on a Win2k system
with Acrobat 6.0. This problem first showed up in the 0.6x builds after
upgrading from Acrobat 5 to 6. If I open a session of Acrobat first, Firebird
unloads pdf files opened in tabs almost instantly, otherwise it can take 20 sec
or more with the CPU pegged at 100% before the tab will close and the browser
can be used. Acrobat 6.0 works well, however, with both Mozilla 1.4b and I.E. 6.0

This seems related to bug #219365 and #218289, although they happen with Firebird
http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=219365
http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=218289
In any case, they should all be marked NEW, no?

I have also noticed this problem with Acrobat.
I run Windows XP Professional and any attempt to close a browser with an open
PDF or press the back button while viewing a PDF Mozilla and Acrobat Reader
freezes. Acrobat works fine in IE.
I am running Firebird .7+
Just thought some extra data might help track down the issue.

I'm getting a very similar problem. Acrobat Reader 6, under Mozilla 1.5, will
display OK, but crashes on exit. It also will not print the page correctly -
only the page number and standard page header etc from Mozilla appears.
I've removed Acrobat Reader 6 from the machine, and version 4.0 (which was still
on here) works fine.

Bug 214137 Comment #13 reported that Acrobat 6.0.1 update (not Acrobat Reader)
resolved Mozilla's hang problem.
Can someone test with Acrobat 6.0.1 update?
(Note: Acrobat Reader 6.0.1 update is not available yet at Adobe site and I do
not know whether Acrobat Reader 6.0.1 will be available or not)
Comment 17•21 years ago

There's a Acrobat Reader update 6.0.1 now available from Adobe and it really
solves any freezes for me in Mozilla. If it was the same reason for this crash,
I suggest that this bug is closed.

I've had the same problem with Firebird 0.7 (and 0.7+) and Acrobat reader 6.0
... (windows XP)
When i opened a pdf in a tab browser, and then close the browser, there was a
message box saying that the pdf will be close (ok, cancel), and then, after the
close, firebird was not reponding, with 97-99% cpu --> only one solution: kill
the app.
I've just downloading acrobat reader ENU 6.0.1.3 and now, there is no problem...

As mentioned in previous comments, testing indicates that upgrading to Acrobat
Reader 6.0.1 fixes this bug.
As such am resolving as Works For Me. Please reopen this bug if problems persist.
