User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.5a) Gecko/20030728 Mozilla Firebird/0.6.1 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.5a) Gecko/20030728 Mozilla Firebird/0.6.1 Sometimes a message download session using POP3 might get interrupted before downloading all messages from the server due to problems on the POP3 service. After fixing the problem Thunderbird goes bogus. It hangs if I don't delete the last message it downloaded from the server during the interrupted session. It displays the status line: Receiving message 1 of XXX and simply hangs. No matter how many times I try, it will hang until I manually purge the last downloaded message on the server. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. have some messages on the server for download 2. force a POP3 server problem so that at least one message on the server is marked as read; be sure that the problem is forced while receiving POP3 messages within Thunderbird (0.2 or 0.3RC) and that Thunderbird hangs trying to download any one message 3. stop Thunderbird message download 4. fix the server problem 5. try to download POP3 messages again 6. it will probably hang on the last downloaded message until you manually purge it from the server Actual Results: Thunderbird hung Expected Results: Should have downloaded all messages. A previous hang while downloading messages shouldn't keep the software from downloading the message again on a new download session.
Do you have "Leave messges on server" enabled or not?
I'm seeing this on my father's machine as well. -->Thunderbird

Even on OS X, this happens. Usually, it happens when the Thunderbird is just launched. After launching the program, receiving email is OK. However system hang caused when the Thunderbird is being launched, and probably it try receiving mail.
Able to repeat error running under Windows 2000 SP4. Hangs Thunderbird (0.8), and will cause Firefox (1.0 preview release) to hang. On shutdown of machine XPCOM is reported as not responding. (In reply to comment #0) > It displays the status line: Receiving message 1 of XXX and simply hangs. No > matter how many times I try, it will hang until I manually purge the last > downloaded message on the server. I am getting the same problem with the current Release Candidate for Windows, except that it is being caused on my end by messages that have no body. My mail provider decides to trunceate the body of messages that it believes is spam. I also have "leave on server" turned on, but as soon as I see another message in my inbox like this, I will try turning it off.
(In reply to comment #0) > It displays the status line: Receiving message 1 of XXX and simply hangs. > No matter how many times I try, it will hang until I manually purge > the last downloaded message on the server. Similar situation is under analysis in Bug 228649. Demia Lessa(reporter of this bug), get protocol log, in order to know whether your problem is same or not. For protocol log, see http://www.mozilla.org/quality/mailnews/mail-troubleshoot.html#pop Please note that log file is overlayed on restart. Log file should be back-upped after shutdown. (In reply to comment #2) Same comment as above. David P James, get protocol log. (In reply to comment #3) > Usually, it happens when the Thunderbird is just launched. > After launching the program, receiving email is OK. JongAm Park, your problem seems to be different from reporter's problem, although "hung" is common. Get protocol log. > However system hang caused when the Thunderbird is being launched, and probably it try receiving mail. If you use "Run filter on folder" and are experinecing hang on next mail download, this can be same as Bug 266905. (In reply to comment #4) Nick Sutton, your case seems to be different from reporter's case, rather sounds same case as commnet #3. If same as reporter's case, mails can not be downloaded until problematic mail is deleted from server. > On shutdown of machine XPCOM is reported as not responding. After hang problem of Bug 266905, process won't stop even though application window is closed. In this case, killing the process from task manager is required to terminate completely. Nick Sutton, if you use "Run filter on Folder", see Bug 266905. If you don't use "Run filter on folder", get protocol log. (In reply to comment #5) Evan Jones, your case sounds same case as reporter's, then sounds similar to Bug 228649. Protocol log will clarify your problem, I think.
No one responds to my last comment for more than one year... I think this bug has to be closed as "EXPIRED", but it's impossible due to confirm by David P James on 2003-11-17. (I don't know how to change back "NEW" to "UNCONFIRMED".) So closing as WORKSFORME. To all problem reporters: If your problem still occurs with newest trunk nightly build, re-open or open new bug after searching bugzilla for already reported bugs.

EXPIRED is not available to normal humans, it is reserved for special processes. > (I don't know how to change back "NEW" to "UNCONFIRMED".)
