User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-GB; rv:1.6a) Gecko/20031029 Firebird/0.7+ Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-GB; rv:1.6a) Gecko/20031029 Firebird/0.7+ The following sites' icons are linked using <link rel= "icon">; Firebird acknowledges the icons by displaying them in the tab bar, yet they are not displayed in the location bar: http://www.mozilla.org/ http://www.freewebs.com/mooquackwooftweetmeow/index.htm Other sites, whose icon *does* appear in the location bar, include: http://www.google.co.uk/ http://www.radiotimes.beeb.com/ Both of these sites' icons are named favicon.ico. (I don't think this is to do with image format, as the freewebs site uses .ico format.) Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Load http://www.mozilla.org/ and http://www.google.co.uk/ into two tabs 2. While watching the icon in the location bar, switch back and forth between the two Actual Results: Google's icon appears in the location bar when its tab is active; mozilla.org's icon appears only momentarily, when the tab has just been activated Expected Results: Both sites' icons should appear in the location bar while their respective tabs remain active Behaviour appears to be unaffected by Tabbrowser Extensions (ver.1.9.2003102401)
I'm pretty sure this is a duplicate of bug 222602. The link I give on that page behaves the same way, however you'll notice that the site icon there IS called favicon.ico. If you clear your cache and load the mozilla.org site in the current tab, you'll notice that it displays the icon in the location bar. If you temporarily switch tabs or reload the page, however, the icon vanishes indefinitely. That's why I thought it might have something to do with the way favicons are stored or retrieved from the cache. Your mooquackwooftweetmeow site doesn't seem to behave quite the same. It rarely dislays the icon in the location bar even if the browser cache is cleared and the page reloaded. I did manage to get it to appear at least once, though.
By the way, loading your home page icon might be exacerbated by the fact it's 274 KB in size. Most favicons are less than 1 KB!
Ah - yes, it is quite large; that's probably 'cos it had about 6 different sizes, all in True Colour. I've replaced it with a much-trimmed version - only 16, 32 and 48 pixels and monochrome - 1350 bytes. “ If you clear your cache and load the mozilla.org site in the current tab, you'll notice that it displays the icon in the location bar. If you temporarily switch tabs or reload the page, however, the icon vanishes indefinitely. ” Fb20031029/WinXPH: Switching tabs indeed causes the icon to disappear from the location bar after flashing up briefly; however reloading *does* seem to reinstate the icon on mozilla.org, before or after switching tabs. Reloading does *not* seem to reinstate the icon on my page, though. “ I'm pretty sure this is a duplicate of bug 222602. The link I give on that page behaves the same way, however you'll notice that the site icon there IS called favicon.ico. ” If site icons disappear even if the icon *is* called "favicon.ico" (as per bug 222602), then I think this bug is invalid - but not quite a dupe, as it's about inconsistencies based on whether the icon is called "favicon.ico", rather than the fact that the icon doesn't show. However I can't confirm bug 222602, and until it is confirmed I don't think this bug should be marked invalid.
Now your favicon is much smaller, I find it's behaving exactly like the problem in bug 222602. It appears in the location bar the first time you load the page, and vanishes when you reload, or sometimes if you switch tabs. So I think that while your bug title (which has inferences about the cause of the problem) may not fit that bug, the underlying cause is probably still a duplicate.
I think the longer loading time was affecting the icon as per bug 222602 comment 5; the name may not have any effect. However I don't think this should be marked invalid until bug 222602 is confirmed as the cause.
