I use IMAP. My mail is presorted by list into my IMAP folders --
including "Junk" mail (sorted into Junk).
While I do want MailNews to keep track of how many new messages
go into each "active" folder (like Junk). I really don't want
it to beep every time a message goes into any folder -- like say
a discussion about cats. I want the unread count updated, but
I don't want mozilla to beep at me everytime a catfight breaks
out on the cat list (sorry)....or more certainly -- I don't
want it to beep at me and tell me "you have mail" everytime
a new file gets added to the Junk folder. But I do want to
know how many filels are added to Junk to remind me to look
every once in a while to make sure my primitive filters haven't
caught valid email.
Thanks!
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. have useless mail folders that you want to keep track of unread messages in
2.
3.
Actual Results:
you get notified when useless mail folder gets a new message
Expected Results:
would like it if moz just upped the 'new mail count' in the folder
but didn't "beep" at me and tell me "Linda has new mail!" Considering
that 95% of my email is filtered into lists and I get an average
of 900 email messages/day, that darn "you have new mail" signal
goes off *_VERY_* often.

While this is not an unreasonable request, the same result would be better met
(I think) by the request in bug 11040, which requests a filter action to
suppress notification. See also bug 189289, bug 91498, bug 206050.

In fact this option is already available ("check this folder for new
messages"), but does not work! (see bug #250533).

I don't use IMAP -- just regular POP. But, I would love this feature. I know
on the Hylafax mailing list I am going to get a new email about every 5 minutes.
I don't want notifcation when those messages are routed to my Hylafax email
folder via a filter. When I want to read them, I will open that folder.
I don't know when I am goin got get an email in my Inbox, and want my little
noise and notification to trigger.
I would love to have the optoin to assign yet a _different_ sound when I get an
email that is filtered to my Family folder, so I can drop everything and see
what funny joke my mother has sent me.

This is an automated message, with ID "auto-resolve01".
This bug has had no comments for a long time. Statistically, we have found that
bug reports that have not been confirmed by a second user after three months are
highly unlikely to be the source of a fix to the code.
While your input is very important to us, our resources are limited and so we
are asking for your help in focussing our efforts. If you can still reproduce
this problem in the latest version of the product (see below for how to obtain a
copy) or, for feature requests, if it's not present in the latest version and
you still believe we should implement it, please visit the URL of this bug
(given at the top of this mail) and add a comment to that effect, giving more
reproduction information if you have it.
If it is not a problem any longer, you need take no action. If this bug is not
changed in any way in the next two weeks, it will be automatically resolved.

Still would like this feature.
There does not appear to be a "per-folder" alert option. Only
an option of whether or not to check the folder for new mail --
which for most of my folders I do want checked so I can see the
counts (and ideally, sizes) updated regarding unread messages
in those folders, I would just like to be able to configure
different sounds for different folders -- some folders receive
high priority mails, while others receive less important
discussion lists or "code-check" reports. During the waking hours
I probably tend to get at least 1 email/minute, which, I guess
explains why I usually don't hear the email beep -- I learned
to tune it out of my consciousness because it doesn't really
mean I should change what I am doing and process the incoming
email as an "interrupt" -- but there doesn't seem to be
a straightforward way to allow different signals (tones) for different
levels of interruption (by folder).

I suggest an "Alert for new mail" checkbox (default = checked) be added to the Folder Properties > General Information pane.

see recent discussion in #311240, including two extensions that implement alert filters: FiltaQuilla and ToneQuilla.

Compare bug 373182, which ask is more or less the same.
Comment 20•15 years ago

I would say 'less the same', but in any case it's several years later, so that should be marked dup of this.

My phone will let me set a ring tone for who is calling - so I know whether to answer it or ignore it.
I'd like similar for email notifications on the filters - so when I set up a filter, I can customise the notificiation - sound and colour or no notification.
A loud notification would be handy for the incoming from someone I'm waiting for stuff from - bank, real estate agent, computer warranty repair etc.
No notification would be really handy for all the stuff I don't need to look at right now. Like online magazines. And then I can just go through the unread stuff when I have time free.

Fourteen votes; is that enough to get development moved along for this request? (Has there been any development done?)

I fail to see how this bug is different from bug 201420.
Anyone?

I'd agree with the dup to bug 201420 - but I would not like to lose the vote count.
