We need to fix old and new duplicate content problems
http://www.mozilla.org/binaries.html
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/distros.html
http://www.mozilla.org/download.html
http://www.mozilla.org/download-mozilla.html
http://www.mozilla.org/download/ <-- upcoming?
http://www.mozilla.org/releases/
http://www.mozilla.org/products/mozilla1.x/download/
http://www.mozilla.org/university/hof.xml
and various language build download pages...
These are very hard to maintain because if you need to add a new product you can
easily miss pages, and if you need to change/fix product description, it's even
harder. We need to centralize all download links in no more than two pages.
binaries.html and distros.html don't belong . download-mozilla.html is a rather
confusing filename. Proposing:
m.o/download/
m.o/download/source.html
m.o/university/hof.xml
m.o/intl/

and don't forget http://www.mozilla.org/source.html :-(
I would really like we remove the top navigation Download link. On most software
sites "Software" is almost synoumous to "Download". I suggest that we change
"Product" to "Software" and remove "Download", that way we remove two almost
identitical links and leave room for "Documentation" link (which is really hard
to find in the new design).
Michael, wanna take this bug? I already have my hands full with community.html
rewrite.
Summary: Too many download pages already → Too many (9+ duh!) download pages already

I'm happy to make changes, but first one of the Mozilla.org people needs to
decide what changes should be made.

I don't think the navbar should change, but we definitely need to clean up the
download pages situation and make sure we end up with 1 page that has links to
(1) latest versions of all the software, (2) all platforms for each of those,
(3) all languages for each of those.
I will try and get website-drivers to take a good look at this issue.

thanks Bart.
The stable page is staying as builds on stable development branch (1.4.1), so
that's ok for now.
While I'm spamming this bug, a related issue is that there are version numbers
all over the place. Thunderbird 0.4 has just been released, and now there are a
whole bunch of pages that need updating from 0.3. Would be better to have the
number in one place (or very few), and not in the graphic banner, which is now
out of date even on the thunderbird project page. There are always going to be
problems keeping things up to date, so minimising the number of pages that need
any changes when new versions are available would be good.

related bug 227666
There is no link to download firebird nightly builds.
I agree with Daniel; the Download link is redundant, and it's stupid to waste
navbar space like that.
Developer should lead to developer documentation
User documentation should be linked to from the relevant product's page.
The Download link should be replaced with "Get Involved" or "Contribute"--
because that is fundamentally missing from what is supposed to be the main
page of an open source project!

http://www.mozilla.org/binaries.html ,
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/distros.html , and
http://www.mozilla.org/releases/stable.html now redirect. So down to 6 :-)
Daniel Wang <stolenclover@yahoo.com.tw>: you messed up.
one of the main functions of binaries.html was to provide links to *nightly*
builds. a page about /releases/ does not do that. please put binaries.html back.
in general we're trying to avoid top level pages, and we're trying to avoid
removing pages with 'well known' (i.e. linked to from outside www.mozilla.org)
addresses (especially printed in books).

nope

http://www.mozilla.org/download-mozilla.html
http://www.mozilla.org/releases/
http://www.mozilla.org/university/hof.xml

The top navigation bar no longer links to download.html. We need to figure out
what to do with it (like merge with products/?)

Here is an idea:
Old location New location Type of content
/releases/ /products/mozilla1.x/releases/ Same as other
./releases/
/download.html Same or /download/ Lists most recent
product downloads
/download-mozilla.html /source/ or /source.html Downloading source.
/source.html Same or /source/
Comment 18•20 years ago
|
||
I would prefer /source/ because it allows to add easily any subdirectories (as
./suite/, ./firefox/, ./nss/ etc.)
Comment 19•20 years ago
|
||
I'm wondering if source.html should be moved to developer.mozilla.org (once Myk
configures that url to work properly).
I'd put download-mozilla.html at /products/source/
("products" should really be called "software".)
I don't think /releases/ should move unless it's being reorganized at the same time.
Comment 20•20 years ago
|
||
fantasai, shouldn't that be "gecko" instead of "source" as in "/products/gecko/".
Comment 21•20 years ago
|
||
Anne: I don't see why it would be "gecko" - the source page covers all the
products - including Sunbird, Camino, Spidermonkey, c-sdk, Mozilla Classic
(although some of those have their own pages linked from the main "source" page)

Closing this as fixed. Many of the old download pages for the Mozilla Suite now redirect to this page:
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/browsers.html
Some of the pages mentioned in the initial bug report also now point to
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/mozilla-based.html
If there are any other Mozilla Suite download pages that still exist somewhere on www.mozilla.org, please feel free to reopen.
