This seems to be calling for Mozilla to do the right thing but the opposite of what's being called for in bug 236389.
Perhaps the best solution is "set Mac codes if and only if you can get them right". For creator, that would mean MOZZ for Composer documents, and maybe using "Open With" file handler prefs when available. For type, the most helpful case would be to set TEXT for anything that Gecko's parser counts as text. Text documents are the ones most likely to download with unexpected suffixes.
