Overview: ALT,spacebar is not activating the Windows control menu (hiding behind the application icon at the left end of the title bar) like ALT+spacebar does (bug 19328, WORKSFORME). Fixing this probably means making [spacebar] an accelerator key for the main menubar, which then selects the same action that ALT+spacebar is triggering directly. Steps to Reproduce: 1. Launch any Mozilla App. 2. Type ALT,SPACEBAR (press ALT, release, hit spacebar) Actual Result: Focus goes to the menubar; other than that, nothing at all. Expected Result: Focus goes to the menubar, then the control menu activates so that a selection can be made from it. Tested with: 2000-01-06-08-M13 nightly binary on Windows NT 4.0sp3 This almost certainly occurs on all MS-Windows OS. The same sort of widget may be triggered the same way with some X Window Managers - don't know.

tested with opt comm bits on winNT 2000022408 --and this is what i see: press Alt, release, hit spacebar -> nothing happens however, if i do the following: hold down Alt, hit spacebar *twice* then the windows control menu appears. hitting spacebar once is not enough, though. dunno if this is expected behavior, since on 4.7x, i only need to do what sidr@albedo.net originally outline (or hit the spacebar once when holding Alt down).
No, to activate the Windows control menus it should only be necessary to press [spacebar] once after ALT-release. Restested with the 2000-02-24-08-M14 nightly binary on WinNT I could get the control menu to show by keying ALT+space+space (as seen by sairuh) or ALT-release,ALT+space. Both of those are variations on ALT+space, the subject of bug 19328, which will get REOPENed. ALT,space -- the subject of this bug, did not work either. REOPENing. These problems are quite possibly a result of either the regression in bug 18598, "menus take focus on "alt," then behave in a non-standard way", (2000-02-14) or its fix.

FYI try hitting alt, letting go and then hitting alt+space. That seems to work.

It's more than just Alt,Space that should work (staying within the context of this bug). In a standard Windows app you can press and release Alt to activate the menu bar, arrow left/right to your hearts content, activating different top-level menu items, and then press space to display the system menu. Accomplishing what I described in Moz actually shouldn't be too tough. I think that GetSystemMenu() and TrackPopupMenu() are going to come into play along the way, though. Adding myself to the cc: list to remind me to look at this if I get time.
"FYI try hitting alt, letting go and then hitting alt+space. That seems to work." This doesn't work for me. Latest behavior in 2000050608 seems to be that pressing (and holding) alt, then pressing (and holding) space for an extended period of time will show the system menu. Still not right though - you should be able to let go of space immediately, not hold it down.
By the way, that behavior I described (alt(hold)+space(hold) only works if an HTML textbox/textarea doesn't currently have the focus.
Blake, Alt then Alt+Space still works for me with the 2000050615 build. But as you mentioned, it didn't work when a textbox was active, including the Location field.

hyatt, I don't think it's a dup...19328 is that pressing alt and spacebar at the same time doesn't show the control menu. This bug is that pressing alt, then letting go, then pressing spacebar doesn't activate the control menu...re- resolve as dup if you still disagree

Would anyone object if I duped this in favor of bug 86770? That's for the same problem, but it's a much cleaner bug (less chatter).
I've attached a patch to bug 86770. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 86770 ***
