User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.8a2) Gecko/20040608 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.8a2) Gecko/20040608 I subscribe to a mailing list, fedora-list@redhat.com. I filter on 'To or cc' to send messages into a 'fedora-list' folder. When I click on the folder, some messages are swept away into the 'junk' folder. I thought that I could prevent this behavior by adding 'fedora-list@redhat.com' to my address book (since I have the 'Do not mark messages mail as junk mail if the sender is in my address book' option (in junk mail controls) turned on. I want the junk mail filter to ignore messages if the address in the 'To' field is in my address book. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Enable junk mail controls. Make sure 'Do not mark messages mail as junk mail if the sender is in my address book' box in 'Tools | Junk Mail Controls' is checked. Select an address book. 2. Join a mailing list and place its e-mail address in the address book selected in step 1. 3. Set up a filter to direct mailing list messages into its own folder. 4. Retrieve messages from the mailing list. 5. Note the number of unread messages in the folder tree. See if the number changes when you activate the folder. Actual Results: Some messages move to the junk folder. Expected Results: Messages with the 'To' address in my address book should be ignored.
This is not a good idea. Spam often will go out to multiple addresses, especially multiple similar addresses. For instance, I have quite a few people in my address book who get mail at the well.com domain. Whitelisting on my address book would allow spam that addresses both me and one of them to get thru. There are a few bugs open about preventing the junk controls from running on a particular folder or on mail that has been filtered: bug 189970; bug 198961; bug 234044 Recommend WONTFIX.

Mike, I guess it depends on what you think is worse: Spam getting through or good mail winding up in the junk folder. Junk mail has never been sent to the mailing list (fedora-list@redhat.com) because you must join and confirm before you can send to it or receive from it. Isn't this true of most mailing lists?
