some pdf file, when emailed from mozilla, will be received corrupted on outlook
express. if this attachment is email to self, mozilla does not show that there
is attachment at all.

Check: Preferences | Navigator | Helper Applications
You should have an entry for application/pdf, associated with the .pdf
extension. You should *not* have an entry for "pdf" without "application/".
