Would be nice if Thunderbird could import mailfiles in the format Thunderbird
itself uses i.e. UNIX Mailbox format. (And possibly also .msg files).

I support this. Thunderbird should be able to import a mbox file, this is the
most common file format use for mail boxes. Users migrating to thunderbird might
have been using pine, kmail, elm, mutt which all store their mail in mbox.
Moreover, mbox file format is considered as the common denominator for all mail
client.
The import wizard should simply propose in addition to outlook and eudora import
to import a mbox file as a folder. I know there is a faq entry on how to do
this, but importing such a common file format as mbox should require that much
fiddling.

But bug 63389 is for core and this one is for thunderbird. (this is a little bit stupid - searching for a bug for a certain product wont lead you to a bug for another product...)
I think there is missing the possibility to import mailfolders from kmail!
see also bug 157329 (for core, should hold for thunderbird too) and bug 225896
