of bug 214137
People
(Reporter: britm, Assigned: bugs)
Details
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20041001 Firefox/0.10.1
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20041001 Firefox/0.10.1
In Firefox, I clicked a link to a PDF page on my computer. Acrobat reader
loaded the page in the same browser window, which was not my intent. I clicked
the back button, but acrobat reader posted its "updates available" window just
after I did so. Firefox and the acrobat update window hung, and stayed hung
until I killed the acrord32.exe process. I clicked the PDF link again and this
time allowed Acrobat to update itself. I'm now showing version 6.00.0000.0878
of nppdf32.dll (plug-in for netscape) dated 5/15/2003 12:01am and version
6.00.0001.1091 of EWH32.api dated 11/3/2003 2:23pm. I'm surprised that I wasn't
already at acrobat versions from 2003. In any case, I can't reproduce the
problem with the updated versions.
Reproducible: Didn't try
Steps to Reproduce:
1. install an out-dated version of acrobat reader plug-in
2. bring up a pdf page in the browser
3. give acro reader a chance to check for updates to itself, then click back button
Actual Results:
firefox hung, hogged 99% CPU, and stopped updating its window. Could not kill
firefox by closing window or from task bar. After considerable delay at each
step, was able to bring up Task Manager, attempt to kill firefox application
(unsuccessful), then kill the acrord32.exe process (successful). Firefox
returned to normal after acrord32.exe process killed
Expected Results:
A possible defect in acrobat reader's update mechanism should not affect
firefox. At the very least, firefox should allow plug-in to hang while firefox
continues to function.

[from bug reporter] forgot to mention that my current (updated) version of
Acrobat reader plug-in is 6.00.0002.0126 dated 5/18/2004 2:08am.

Hi,
This has been repeatedly happening. I use Windows XP and Adobe Acrobat Reader
version 6.0 0 5/19/2003. After opening a PDF file through FireFox, whenever I
attempt to close the tab or click on the back button the browser hangs, after
which it takes a lot of time to close(i.e 15-20 mins) or I need to kill the
acrobat process.
I have been repeatedly facing the same problem.
Regards,
Ajay

Similar problem - previously using Acrobat Reader 6.0 without problems. Upgraded
to Acrobat 6.0 professional, now each time I navigate to a pdf page and then try
to leave that page Firefox hangs
I also get the same problem . I am using Windows 2000 5.00.2195 service pack 4.
It also crashes when I open the pdf in a new tab and try to close the tab
I don't think it is a memory problem the IE 6 on my machine does not behave that
way and I have 1,047,544 KB of RAM. Using Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Standard.
thanks
