There needs to be a way to filter a specific subject and to automatically download attachments into a user directory.

As many people do, Your in the news groups and are in
(alt.binaries.pictures.ECT) and want to download all the .jpg or .bmp or
attachments in the newsgroup into a user selected directory for offline viewing.
There needs to be a filter command to select the subject key words like (.jpg)
then, download the attachment automatically into the directory of choice like
(c:\pictures) ECT.

Filtering on subject is already there. More to the point, you can view a folder
and enter a text for the subject to match in the MailView at the top of the
thread pane, limiting display to only those messages with that subject.
At that point, you could easily select any or all of the displayed messages and
then (with the feature requested at the bug to which I'm duping this) save them
all to a single directory.
It's possible that what you actually want to filter on is the name of the
attachment, rather than the subject (terminology counts). That feature is
requested in bug 105169.
