The ability to modify a message has several uses, mainly related with removing
unwanted data from received emails, such as attached images or backgrounds that
use space and are not needed, or removing an attachement after having archived
it somewhere. Other mail programs (especially Outlook) allow to alter the
contents of an email and I find this feature almost essencial. I find
Thunderbird very good for handling IMAP, but I still depend on Outlook once a
month to do cleansing of rubbish and "deattachement" of pictures and other
files, before archiving in proper folders. The feature "Edit Message as New" is
pretty much the feature requested, if it only would maintain the headers and
replace the original email.
