User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20040913 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7.3) Gecko/20040913 When trying to add italian dictionary, in some case no message is reported, in some other mozilla tells me the dictionary has been installed. But in both cases the dictionary isn't available, neither after restarting. No trace of spell-it.xpi in .mozilla directory. Also tryed with root user. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Go here: http://dictionaries.mozdev.org/installation.html, i.e.: where you are forwarded by "Download more" item, in "Compose/Tools/Spell Check" 2. Click on italian, as indicated there 3. Restart mozilla to see if the italian dictionary is here Actual Results: No italian yet Expected Results: My mail is quite formal and important, I want to be sure I haven't typed mistakes...
Also for EN-AU in Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8a6) Gecko/20041203. When I click on the Install button the dialog disappears and nothing happens.
I tryed this now on version 0.9 (20041103) on Linux, and i have the same problem.
Here is the solution (worked for me): You need to have access to the program folder (more specific the [program]/components/myspell directory). http://dictionaries.mozdev.org/notes.html#c4 Maybe .aff and .dic files should be installed in the profile folder, and not in the program folder?
I've solved under Linux, but there's more than the (...)components/myspell accessibility: (Under Linux, should be the same in other platform, changing dirs) 0) be sure the user who is running Mozilla has access to (...)components/myspell (i.e.: run it as root) 1) Go to http://dictionaries.mozdev.org/installation.html 2) right click the dictionary of your interest and download it locally, for ex.: in /tmp 3) On URL text box type file:///tmp and click on the just downloaded .xpi. Mozilla will ask you if you want to install, say yes and then check if .dic/.aff files have been added under (...)components/myspell dir. New dictionary should be available for all users now. I don't know why if you first download the file then poin Mozilla to local copy works, while clicking directly on the URL didn't. Probably it's not properly downloaded from slow timing-out connections.

On my system I can't install en_GB dictionary at all, by either method. Thunderbird goes through all the expected motions and issues no error messages (I didn't try running from a shell), but on restarting it still has no dictionary other than the US one. I have to run Thunderbird as root, which is not a good idea, to install en_GB. While I was root, I took the opportunity to remove the US dictionary, as I couldn't see how to set the British one as default. Besides, I _never_ write in American. Not on purpose, anyway. ;-)
(In reply to comment #5) > On my system I can't install en_GB dictionary at all, by either method. I'm the writer of comment #4 and I've succeded again in the procedure. However, I've downloaded the .xpi with another tool (wget), a first download attempt with Mozilla resulted in a 1kb file got, against a real size of about 300kb. Therefore I beelive it's a download problem. Following mentioned procedure should work. > dictionary other than the US one. I have to run Thunderbird as root, which is > not a good idea, to install en_GB. While I was root, I took the opportunity to > remove the US dictionary, as I couldn't see how to set the British one as You run as root only during installation/removal stage. Afterwards the changes should be available for all users. At least this is how things are going on my machine, where Mozilla is installed in /usr/local/mozilla. > default. Besides, I _never_ write in American. Not on purpose, anyway. ;-) > Decent American or UK English, rather than "Maccaronic Italiani*s*ed English" would be enough for me! :-D
I never testet on Linux with Seamonkey, but i've tested to install German dictionary on Windows with Seamonkey, where it works well. And I've tested on several Macs with MacOS 10.4 and 10.3 using multiple Seamonkey 1.0, 1.0.1, 1.0.2 and 1.5 nightlies togehter with earlier installed Mozilla. On Mozilla it works, on Seamonkey it does not. It gives me an installation success message, but after restarting Seamonky, the us-english dictionary is still the only dictionary. Maybe a conflict with the original mozilla profile.
I can confirm this error for version 1.5.0.7 and I noticed the same in version 1.5.0.9. Trying to install in a root session won't help.
Sorry, I was talking about Thunderbird version here.
The same problem. When trying to add Latvian dictionary, it shows that cannot find the page. Tried to install the dictionary manually by going to the link "Dictionaries". Dictionary was downloaded successfully, but there is still spell checking option only for English. There is no such problem with Firefox, Latvian dictionary was added successfully, and works great!
Not enough of an expert to identify any solutions above. I have the latest versions of Firefox and T'bird. The .dic file resides in Windows/Application Data/Mozilla/Firefox/etc but when I try to action it via the T'bird options it's greyed out. ANy ideas, please?
I got "SeaMonkey could not install this item because "install-nr9..rdf" (provided by the item) is not well-formed or does not exist. Please contact the author about this problem.". Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; rv:1.9b5pre) Gecko/2008032301 SeaMonkey/2.0a1pre. I think all dictionaries xpi's should be updated to install in Seamonkey, but this should be new bug. About this bug, i've successfully installed dictionaries from other locations, so this one maybe can be set as fixed.
Tried on Seamonkey 1.1.9rc. Dictionary installs without error, but not appear after restart. But if you go thru preferences -> Mail & Newsgroups -> Composition and select Download more Dictionaries ... in language listbox Seamonkey takes to addons page https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/seamonkey/browse/type:3 , and dictionaries listed there work as expected. So IMHO this bug related to obsoleted spell check engine, resolving as WORKSFORME
