User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0) Opera 7.54 [en]
Build Identifier: Mozilla 4.0, 5.0
This can be find in server logs only. Mozilla 4.0 and 5.0 first GET's all
necessary files to display page (200 answers for all requests) and then tries to
"GET notfound.htm" which ends with 404. There is no "notfound.htm" in my page
sources. Contact me at m.borkowski@chembuddy.com for logs or see example in
Actual Results.
Reproducible: Sometimes
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Enter www.chembuddy.com
2. ask me for log
3.
Actual Results:
hope it is not too long, this is taken from log:

Should not try to "GET notfound.htm" I think. There is no reason.

Is this the only client with a GET notfound.htm request? I just opened your site
(host would be pD9E0CAxy.dip.t-dialin.net in your server logs) and sniffed with
Ethereal at the same time, i couldn't see such a request from Mozilla or Firefox.

Probably due to trying to get "favicon".
Following is HTTP header log by "Live HTTP Headers" extention.
Change browser.chrome.favicons to false thru about:config if you don't want.
>
> GET /favicon.ico HTTP/1.1
> Host: www.chembuddy.com
>(snip)
>
> HTTP/1.x 404 Not Found

Sorry, you are server side people, not client side.
IE introduced "favicon" feature - if "favicon.ico" exists at server, he uses it
as icon for "My Favarites".
Mozilla family supports both IE's "favicon"(no need of HTML) and "site icon"(by
<link rel="SHORTCUT ICON"> in <HEAD>).
If "404 & notfound.htm" log is not produced when access by IE, it's possibly
because of difference in implementation on "favicon.ico".
- Mozilla uses "HTTP GET" for "faviocn.ico" always.
- IE uses "HTTP HEAD" for "favicon.ico" first.
If you merely don't want to see log of "404 & notfound.htm", disabling "404
page" is a solution.
Are there any needs of customized "404 page"?
But if you want to use "404 & notfound.htm" for lost link detection, ... sorry,
I don't know solution.
I don't want and can't to ask developers to change favicon.ico support logic,
although I think "HTTP GET for favicon.ico always even though server side
doesn't want" is not a good behaviour.

want access to whole log file. I have put log through "grep notfound.htm logname

There are no GET favicon.ico requests in the log so that's not the source of the

Your site returned "404 Not Found" for "GET notfound.htm".
Sorry for my misundersanding on your log.
(404 was retunred to a access and "notfound.htm" was used when respond, instead
of HTTP GET from client for notfound.htm)
According to your log, "HTTP GET notfound.htm" are issued by both Mozilla & IE.

Although Mozilla users can change user agent string, and although proxy or
search engine etc. may fake user agent string, I think this indicates that it
isn't Mozilla only problem.
My Mozilla also didn't issue "HTTP GET notfound.htm" when I accessed your
site(this is same result as Frank's).
So the problem can not be "problem on any Mozilla".
If most of all "HTTP GET notfound.htm" is from Mozilla, and if "notfound.htm" is
included as link(even if not clickable) in your HTML, Mozilla(& Extentions) can
be a suspect because Mozilla has "Link Prefetchig" feature.
- Advanced/Chache
- Link Prefetching
Prefetching web pages when idle, so that links in web pages
designated for prefetching can load faster.
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/netlib/Link_Prefetching_FAQ.html#Are_anchor_a_tags_prefetched
says as follows, but some extentions(or Mozilla's new feature) maybe has already
implemeted prefetching for <A>.
> Are anchor (<a>) tags prefetched?
> No, only <link> tags w/ a relation type of next or prefetch are prefetched.
> However, if there is sufficient interest, we may expand link prefetching
> support to include prefetching <a> tags, which include a relation type of
> next or prefetch in the future. Doing so would probably help content
> providers avoid the problem of stale prefetching links.
Suspect in many cases is add-on softwares at the user's PC, because
"notfound.htm" is popular file name in Web world.
- default file name of "404 file" of at least Apache & IIS
But if almost all "HTTP GET notfound.htm" are from Mozilla, extention for
Mozilla is a suspect instead of utilities, search robot, spyware and so on.
Another suspects is query for cracking.
If "200" is returned to "HTTP GET notfound.htm" by Apache or IIS, it means lack
of security in many cases, and it's very lucky for crackers.
Anyway, I think you need more analysis on log for characteristics of "HTTP GET
notfound.htm", before saying Mozilla's bug.
- IP Address, User Agent String, Referer, In what request sequence, When, ...
Utilizing scripting language, such as ".BAT" of MS Win, Active Perl, Ruby, REXX
family, ... will help your log analysis, I think.
By the way, don't paste long log data, attach log text file to this bug instead,
for readability of bug and ease of log analysis by developers.

I don't see why you are so quick to exonerate favicon.ico. Using tcpdump

In the whole yesterdays day log there are 13 occurences of string "favicon" and
495 of "notfound.htm". If the notfound will be GETted after the GET favicon
failed, I would expect both string to appear in log approximately the same
number of times.
I am not sure how these are accesible but try http://bpp.com.pl/stats322/
statslog.20050207 for a todays log in a real time. It should not be more than
1MB for the whole day.

My apologies if I end up being not entirely clear. I am happy to use
many West European languages, and if pushed, Russian, but Polish is
not possible for me!
I am far from certain that everything you have been told is completely
correct.
Normally in such a situation on Bugzilla, I adopt a policy of 'silence
is golden', and try to avoid adding comments. There is a clause in the
ettiquette document for Bugzilla
http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/page.cgi?id=etiquette.html which appears to
cover this
I would urge you to review the Bug 260500 I mentioned earlier.
I am completely convinced that from the Bugzilla perspective, your report
is a Dup of Bug 260500, and in particular that Bug 260500 Comment 8
applies, and therefore I would simply bow out, let someone mark this as
Duplicate, and the fine folk on Bug 260500 can fix it.
This doesn't help your problem, nor the fact that you are floundering.
Given that you are not a webmaster, you would be well advised to seek
out someone who is, and talk this problem over with then.
Now I had pasted a small excerpt from tcpdump in my earlier post, and
had over-looked the full response from your server which contained this
page:
<html>
<head>
<title>404 Not Found</title>
</head>
<body bgcolor="#FFFFFF">
<h1>404 Not Found</h1>
The request <b>/favicon.ico</b> was not found on this server.
</body>
</html>
Thus I am really, really certain that a request for your index page
generates a request for /favicon.ico and you respond with your
custom 404 page. I have seen these transactions on the wire.
What I think that you are logging is last thing that your server did,
which was to send a page called 'notfound.htm'. Your server does not
log the fact that whilst handling the request, having not found
'/favicon ico' it therefore moved onto
sending a custom 404 page. In order to see this happening you would
either need to log requests in addition to responses (not sure that
web servers can do this at all), or check the traffic on the wire.
* The web server's log details responses not requests
Note that IE will occasionally request favicon.ico, but (Bug 260500)
Firefox does it a lot. Quite possibly any page that is not found on
your site will generate a successful GET notfound.htm, and there is
not a one-to-one mapping to favicon.ico in the first place.
The ocurrences of favicon.ico in the log whose URL you posted
probably refers to sites other than yours, quite possibly bpp.com.pl,
your ISP's site.
* Bugzilla is not a support forum
I am certainly happy to investigate complaints and problems that
end-users bring here, but only up to the point where I can say
whether or not there is a defect in Firefox (then I shut up).
I will also clear up anything I say that needs followup. If you
need help, you will probably get better, faster support from
the Firefox support pages or the options linked from it. In
your case, you probably also need
to discuss the whole problem with a friendly webmaster or webmistress,
particularly if you feel out of your depth.

I already did much earlier and you are probably right that it can be the same
problem.
> The ocurrences of favicon.ico in the log whose URL you posted

> your ISP's site.
No :) It is a little bit more complicated. bpp.com.pl and chembuddy.com are both
my domains (just like spet.info.pl), and they are mapped to one virtual server
hosted by home.pl (THE ISP). Log that I showed is all about my virtual server
only.
That's all. I am shutting up. While I don't like what Mozilla does to my log I
know now that the problem is not on my side which I was afraid of.
Best and out :)

Reporter, ask your hosting service company for meaning of log.
(a) Client sent "HTTP GET notfound.htm" and "404" is returned.
(b) Client sent "HTTP GET <smoething>", and "404" is returned,
and file of "notfound.htm" is used on returning "404" response.
>pD9E0CAAB.dip.t-dialin.net - - [06/Feb/2005:16:53:48 +0100] "GET /chembuddy/

If (a), this is probably client side problem, but not Mozilla's problem.
If (b), this is probably because of "HTTP GET favicon.ico" by Mozilla family,
and is DUP of Bug 260500.
But even if (a), Bug 260500 has probably replation to you, because it'll produce
many logs at server and it'll be annoyance for server side users.
So closing as DUP of Bug 260500 according to your comment.
If you'll find Bug 260500 has no relation, re-open this bug, then close INVALID
if not Mozilla's fault or keep open if Mozilla's bug.
Anyway, ask for meaning of log first.
