Overview Description: One should not be able to paste anything into a closed folder - even if it is selected. If the folder is selected AND open, then of course you want to paste into it but otherwise, no. The reason this is important is because currently there is no way to paste and item simply below a folder, ie as the next item in the list. Steps to Reproduce: 1) Open Manage Bookmarks. Cut or Copy a bookmark. 2) Select a closed folder. 3) Select Edit|Paste. Actual Results: It looks like nothing happened but your bookmark was actually pasted in as the last item inside the closed folder. Expected Results: You bookmark should've been pasted in as the next item in the list after the folder. Build Date & Platform Bug Found: All platforms with the 2000022108 builds.
Sorry, marking WONTFIX. Pasting into a closed folder is the expected behavior. When we get drag&drop, this should be much less of an issue.

1. Expected behavior from where? You're aware that would represent a change in functionality from 4.x? 2. Just cuz we will one day have beautiful Drag&Drop, that doesn't mean we permanently break cut&paste does it? 3. How are you supposed to paste something below a folder, ever? I'm not getting huffy, I'm just asking.

Expected behavior may be a vague term, but you can drag&drop into a closed folder, right? Just because you can't immediately see the results of an action don't mean that the action shouldn't work. The whole cut/copy/paste action is in itself vague... for example, if I click on a bookmark item X and then paste, should the past go before or after item X? If it goes AFTER item X, then that means that you can never paste an item in as the FIRST item. If it goes BEFORE item X, then that means that you can never paste an item in as the LAST item. I don't want to write the code to work one way for beta1 (with no drag&drop) and then rewrite it to work another way when drag&drop appears, thus the WONTFIX.

I still don't agree. I understand that it's a choice between to sucky options, but is the answer to not make a choice and leave it broken? You've now left users unable to completely manage bookmarks without the mouse. You've also taken away functionality that was present in 4.x. This doesn't have to work now, but can't it be made to work after d&d is back?
rjc: If I click on a bookmark item X and then paste, should the past go before or after item X? mpt: After. Just like in 4.x. rjc: But if it goes after item X, then that means that you can never paste an item in as the FIRST item. mpt: Yes you can, just open the folder first. The folder will be left selected, you paste, and there's your bookmark as the first item. rjc: Isn't that rather awkward? Making someone open the folder first? mpt: Not really. When people drag and drop, they don't always expect to see the dropped item -- like if they drag it into the Trash, for instance. But when they paste, they *always* expect to see the pasted content. Always always always. So people will always open the folder before they paste, regardless of whether they have to or not. rjc: Um ... aha! But, you still won't be able to paste something as the *very first* item in the bookmarks list, because there isn't a folder to select! mpt: Why not? There was in 4.x -- a `Bookmarks for Whoever' folder. You could select that folder, paste, and the pasted item would be the first item in the list. Why isn't that folder in 5.x? rjc: Well, because it didn't do anything. It was a waste of space. mpt: Well, now you know it was useful for *something*. And also, now it's gone, how am I supposed to specify the `root level' of the bookmarks file as my New Bookmarks Folder, or my Bookmarks Menu Folder, or my Toolbar folder? /mpt waits for answer ...
I'm happy to try and answer questions, but please don't speak for me. Thanks! :^)
