User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8b2) Gecko/20050424 Firefox/1.0+
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8b2) Gecko/20050424 Firefox/1.0+
Firefox is rendered useless when a JavaScript alert is triggered to notify the
user that a field is empty. Firefox appears to slow down significantly as the
script is executed and it is not possible to dismiss the alert.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Visit http://www.ourcolony.net/
2. Don't enter anything into the field, but click the spider icon.
3. User is presented with an alert box. Click "ok" to dismiss.
Actual Results:
Alert box is not dismissed, rendering Firefox useless.
Expected Results:
Alert box should be dismissed, allowing user to continue navigation, etc.
The original reporter on Mozillazine indicated that this is also a problem with
Firefox 1.0.3, but this is also an issue with the latest trunk builds.
The problem appears to be related to the fact that the page is using Flash. When
testing on a new profile (before installing Flash via the plugin finder) the
problem did not occur.

Apologies for bugspam, but this may be relevent. The plugin finder service is
not activated for this page on a vanilla install of the latest trunk (zip).

This is Firefox only, and the reason for this is the wmode="transparent" on the
flash. Remove it and the dialog (any actually) can be dismissed.
You dont need to kill the process, click on the alert once, and then bring up
the task manager and it will be dismissed.

I can still reproduce the problem with the testcase attached to this bug.
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8b4) Gecko/20050715
Firefox/1.0+
Mike, anything I can do to help pin it down? It certainly doesn't WFM like it
should. I get around a 20 second delay and then the undismissable alert().
Reopening pending further investigation...

I've made two identical testcases, except for the wmode="transparent" difference:
http://wargers.org/mozilla/bug291740_wmode/291740_no_wmode.html
http://wargers.org/mozilla/bug291740_wmode/291740_wmode_transparent.html
The difference is very clear.
The wmode=transparent case seems to eat all timer events which makes it hard to
switch tabs or for the alert dialog to come up.
This doesn't happen with the no_wmode testcase.
I suspect this is also where all other bugs are about, when flash seems to cause
a 'hang'.

WFM using Flash Player 8.0r22
repro using Flash Player 7.0r19
Are you using Flash Player 7?

I'm using Flash Player 8 with the latest nightly trunk build.

is this fixed by flash 9, or beta flash mentioned in bug 341380?

New urls, instead of the ones in comment 10:
http://nova.serverway.net/~mw22/mozilla/bug291740_wmode/291740_no_wmode.html
http://nova.serverway.net/~mw22/mozilla/bug291740_wmode/291740_wmode_transparent.html
This is now worksforme, using flash 9.
It seems indeed something that was fixed in flash 9.

Unfortunately, the testcase doesn't work anymore, because the flash file is gone.
Also, the urls I posted are not there anymore :(
