We used to have "language packs" in Netscape6 - Netscape 7 - Mozilla, but not in
Firefox. That`s by design - see bug 268783 comment 5.

OK. Thx. :-)
But anyway I think it would be an good idee to make an multi-language-distribusion.
1. Im dont know how 1.1 would be named, but I hope something like
Firefox-1.1-ab-xy.exe (In older versions it wasnt so - I think ...)
2. In my eys it make senns to make such a distr cause it would be easyer in
europe to spreed it. Here are many different languages nealy by each other and I
think it would be better for P2P-people or pages like getrights-mirrors-page
cause there would be more sources.
I think we should mark this as "new" and add something like "distry" until
somebody (or I :-) start an project ...

There was one serious problems with the old language packs, and a very serious
flaw in their design : you needed to know English before you could install the
language pack in the first place. How will a Chinese or Russian native for
example (not just to pick on those 2), install a Firefox browser in their
language ? They can't. They need a pre-build executable. Real multi-language
installers are possible, but are of much less use for most people.
PS : the "installer" is this one : <http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/all>.

Anyway. I - and maybee others - like the idee of an (maybee net-) multi-lang
installler. A lot of other apps like Total-Commander do it. Im not an good
programmer yet, but I know that an app can detect (Windows)-User-lang and give a
preselection.
Are these changes OK ???

You want to make your own installer ? Sure, why not. That`s the whole point of
open-source software - you can do it. It`s another matter whether this installer
would be used by mozilla.org or not. It might be, or it might be not.

I agree with comment #2. I've just opened a new bug for that:

Hm. I suppose a "real" multi-language installer would have a number of languages built-in, and choose which language to display according to the system locale (with some fallback if the locale language isn't found).
It might be nice, at least for release builds (nightlies are a different matter), but would Mozilla use it? I'm not in favour of WONTFIX but I nevertheless expect that that will be the final decision.

I'm rather sure that we don't want to package *all* localizations into one build, that'd probably end up in a messy install experience.
This would be Windows only anyway, as we only have installers there, and real multi-locale builds tend to be slow at least on startup.
No idea how this blends in with MSIs, which I think we're going to in bug 231062.
There have been requests to do regional builds to deploy in schools and other public places in countries with various languages. I don't think we'd ship those by default, though. I guess.
This may or may not depend on integrating more of our localized data into the actual language packs, i.e., search engines. With appropriate UE for switching languages. There's no bug on that, AFAICT.

As far as NSIS goes this is a dupe of bug 342240. As for MSI's, we'd likely have to cross that bridge when we come to it and with the way MSI's work this could be very difficult to create and support.
