Hi,
I have plenty RSS newsfeeds in my bookmarks, which causes some trouble:
- They are continuously updated even if unused. This wastes bandwidth and fills
logs. I sometimes use the Internet over mobile/GPRS, and then it causes real
costs.
- Even when I am in a foreign network (visiting a customer with my notebook),
the RSS feeds are fetched and can trigger intrusion detection alerts.
- Firefox pretty often hangs with full CPU load for some seconds. I suspect that
this is somehow related with RSS fetches.
- RSS can break SSL certificate selection (see Bug 315589)
So my proposal is:
Allow to turn off automatic RSS fetching. E.g. give a configuration option which allows to choose a mode where no RSS feed is ever fetched before the bookmark is accessed for the first time after firefox startup. Another method would be to never automatically update a RSS bookmark, only if it is accessed and outdated.

Hadmut

Maybe my proposal is also a solution for bug 295758. Although not related in the bug itself, it is related functionally.

Hi,
today Firefox again caused my *a lot* of trouble. I needed it to configure a network device over it's web server, while Firefox was restlessly trying to fetch the RSS feeds.
So there are only two choices: Either not having RSS bookmarks at all, or having Firefox permanently causing unwanted traffic. This is highly annoying. Please stop automatic updating of RSS bookmarks.
Furthermore it is a privacy problem. I can't connect to a foreign network without having all my bookmarks listed in the firewall's log files.

Hadmut
