User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.0.1) Gecko/20060124 Firefox/1.5.0.1 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.0.1) Gecko/20060124 Firefox/1.5.0.1 Whenever I chose to open a file with a helper application by selecting "Open with" and clicking the "Browse..." button Firefox forces me to go through point'n'click hell to find my app. Instead of simply letting me type in the path to the application (in case I already know it) or simply the name of the app (in case I know the name and the app is in my $PATH), or just cut'n'paste the path to the app from another window (for example a shell where I've just run "which <appname>"). Firefox instead insists that I *must* point'n'click my way all the way to the directory holding the application, then click the application and then click the "Open" button. This is quite tedious and slow. Consider this case: I already know what app I want to use to open the file, but can't remember where it is located. To make Firefox happy I have to then execute these steps: - open up a shell. - run "which <name_of_app>" to get the path to the application (let's say "ark" in this example). - doubleclick "File System". - scroll down to find the "opt" directory. - doubleclick the "opt" directory. - scroll down to find the "kde" directory. - doubleclick the "kde" directory. - scroll down to find the "bin" directory. - doubleclick the "bin" directory. - scroll down to find the "ark" executable. - click the "ark" executable. - click the "Open" button. gaaaaaaah... That's not exactely user friendly. If I could instead have simply typed in "ark" (since it happens to be in my $PATH) in an input box and then clicked "Open" that would have been a *lot* better. Or even if Firefox insists on full paths to applications, then if I could have run "which ark" in a shell, then highlighted the full path "/opt/kde/bin/ark" with my mouse and then paste it into an input field in Firefox with middle-mouse button, that would still have been a lot better than being forced to clickityclick my way all the way through my filesystem. Reproducible: Always Actual Results: Firefox forces you to point'n'click your way through the filesystem to find a helper app. Expected Results: Firefox should give me the *option* to point'n'click my way to the app if I want to, but should also give me the option to manually input an application name (and search the PATH for the app in case I did not specify full path).
I think this is not Firefox's dialog. I think (it's a long time since I've used KDE) that the dialog you're seeing is a standard KDE file selection dialog. (Need confirmation here.)

What I'm seeing with Firefox is not a KDE file selection dialog. As can be seen by the attached screenshot of kwrite opening a file, KDE file selection windows have a nice friendly "Location:" input field so you have both the option of entering a filename by hand or using the GUI to point'n'click your way to the file.
