The SeaMonkey project plans on shipping Enigmail as an OpenPGP frontend´, as part of MailNews.
Both the Enigmail project (namely Patrick Brunschwig) and MoFo MailNews subtree owners (namely Scott MacGregor) have given their agreement, so we can start doing actual work:
Step 1: Get a working Enigmail into the Mozilla source tree (/mailnews/extensions/enigmail - probably better name it /mailnews/extensions/openpgp?), as a build option, not part of the default builds
-> Dependencies: interprocess communication facilities needed to talk to OpenPGP (bug 68702).
Step 2: Get the Enigmail code reviewed, especially wrt security implications.
Step 3: Enable Enigmail in SM nightlies to get extended testing.
Step 4: Enable Enigmail in SM releases (probably as an installer option).
Steps 2 and 3 can probably run in parallel.
This bug here should probably get the Enigmail code (without IPC) as attachments in "reviewable chunks"...

As a sidenote: I know that bug 22867 exists - but that bug has well over 200 comments and thus isn't really usable as a place of actual *work*...

This is the current tarball of enigmail (renamed to openpgp). To be installed in mailnews/extensions. It requires ipc-pipe (see bug 68702). Modifications to other Makefiles etc. are not yet done.

This still is blocked by the lack of a usable IPC implementation in the Mozilla core - see (or solve *g*) dependency. :-(

Jakub, see comment #4 here - we need bug 68702 fixed before we can get this going. SeaMonkey would really love to have it, but we need the base functionality first.
So we'll never get OpenPGP functionality...
This bug is now two years old...

Ping. Routing messages to PGP/GPG capable recipients through enigmail is a preferable feature when it comes to events concerning business secrets.

dropping it off the wanted requests, while nice to have, I won't want to take this past our 2.1 beta, and no patches since 2006.

Wouldn't it make more sence to integrate Enigmail into SeaMonkey *and* Thunderbird to make it as easy as possible to encrypt mail and harder for intelligence services like the nsa to read foreign mails?

Hmm, but bug 68702 [corrected bug#] is now RESOLVED FIXED. So, what's stopping integration of Enigmail now (aside from the lack of C++ hackers willing to integrate it)?

Updating summary, to make it clear this bug is about SeaMonkey.
Work is starting to integrate OpenPGP support into Thunderbird (in other bugs).
