Details

I think we should avoid using the hand cursor when you mouse over the favicon in Firefox on Mac OS X.

The hand icon is typically used for dragging in documents, and dragging of rectangles in some design applications.

Kevin, agree?
Good point. The hand icon is certainly not used in Safari or the finder to indicate that an item is draggable.

On the other hand (sorry), The AHIG (linked above) says that the hand icon "Indicates that an item can be manipulated within its containing view." So we're not violating a usage guideline. I think there's a benifit to using the hand icon to indicate that the favicon is draggable when the other potential URLbar icons (security, feed button) are not. I'm inclined to keep the current behavior.

What do you think?
Personally, I think it'd look better if we used a translucent rect and did like Safari, Camino or any other mac app.

It just seems a bit un-standard, although I see your point about discoverability.

BTW, there is already a tooltip that pops up and says "Drag and drop this icon to create a link to this page."
I agree that it's a better affordance in general, and that it increases the discoverability of the drag-the-favicon behaviour in the location bar, but we don't use it anywhere else that this behaviour exists (tabs, links from content, items on the bookmark toolbar) and as the reporter indicates, it seems to have fallen out of favour in modern OS X apps.

I hate the idea of decreasing the discoverability, but in service of the All Mighty Consistency and perhaps even Not Looking Like An OS 9 App Ported to OS X we might want to drop it.
(adding to the OS X look and feel tracking bug;)

Yeah, but I suspect that's a different problem than our use of the hand-cursor. Still worth a new bug though, can you file that and block against 333508?

Probably those bugs, along with a upcoming rewrite of the drag services (to cocoa) will fix the translucency issue.

This is a firefox bug that has been fixed (dunno when), so I'm resolving this as wfm.
