please make ldap address books updatable

Reproducible: Always
http://64.233.167.104/search?q=cache:YqVJ0A7vWZkJ:lists.slug.org.au/archives/slug/2004/06/msg00440.html+thunderbird+ldap+%22address+book%22+read-only&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=7

I think the moz ldap interface is read-only which is a pity.

Evolution on Linux is read/write so much better from the gui/ldap backend perspective.

So for now I guess I am SOL. The most I will be able to squeeze out of the Thunderbird Address Book is the name and email, which is OK for many uses.

However I will have to use yet another client to see the full records and do general management, which I was hoping to avoid.

Fortunately I have found JXplorer. A Java based, Open Source LDAP Browser, which should do the trick for now.

Yes we do want to make ldap writeable. However we are currently lacking developers to implement it, but welcome more (see http://www.mozilla.org/developer/). Bug 86405 is already covering the enhancement therefore I'm marking this as a duplicate.

Rather than using abook.mab to store the address book on your hard disk, you could use a LDAP server to share the address book.

Unfortunately Thunderbird currently doesn't support editing entries on the LDAP server so its most useful in an environment where an admin maintains a corporate address book.

Hello Mark,

thank you for the response; can you please let me know if your patch:

   https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=124897

is available somewhere for download
as compiled in a win32 thunderbird 1.5 build?

Thank you

Andrei
