In 1.5.0.4, a UI pref existed whereby the user could force [webpage links (within Firefox) that would open in new windows] to open in the current tab. Alpha 3 effectively removes this. In Alpha 3, the only relevant pref is the following:
| Open links that would open new windows in:
| o new windows
| o new tabs in the most recent window
I feel this is a bad move, since, even though there is a benefit in reducing the number of UI prefs, the removed pref is an important one, to the extent that, IMO, its removal is not justified by the aforementioned benefit. I feel this pref should be reinstated.
I propose the following as a replacement:
| Open **webpage** links that would open new windows in:
| o new windows
| o new tabs
| o the same tab as the link
|
| Open links **from other applications** that would open new windows in:
| o new windows
| o new tabs in the most recent window
Reproducible: Always

That is decided per Bug 308396.
But you still can set the pref browser.link.open_newwindow in about:config to 1 in order to get this behaviour.

I don't see anything in bug 308396 about removing the "same tab" option. What I do see is bug 264395 saying this pref broke a lot of sites in ways that didn't make it obvious that the "same tab" option was the problem.
Summary: Webpage links that would open in new windows can no longer be forced to open in the current tab, with the UI. → Links that would open in new windows can no longer be forced to open in the current tab (same tab) (except through hidden prefs)

The UI was changed between 1.9a1_2006012013 and 1.9a1_2006012021 and when I do a bonsai query, the checkins in that time span contain Bug 308396 which I consider the most likely one.

Sure, but I was hoping to find a mention of *why* it was removed in that bug.

Beltzner made it clear in a dev-apps-firefox post that this was intentional.

This is an often-harmful pref, and has implications that are not easily understood by users. The decision was made to not expose a potentially harmful behaviour to all users, despite the fact that some people do want this behaviour. See bug 264395 for more details on the problems with that behaviour.
