User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.2; en-US; rv:1.8.0.4) Gecko/20060508 Firefox/1.5.0.4 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.2; en-US; rv:1.8.0.4) Gecko/20060508 Firefox/1.5.0.4 Carat browsing turns itself on randomly. I first noticed this when I installed XP x64 and I think it appeared in FF 1.5.0.2 but I am not 100% sure. It does not happen on my 32bit machines. It is really annoying because carat browsing will turn on when I am typing in a form and then apostrophes and slashes bring up the find menu and arrow keys stop moving the cursor. Hitting F7 does bring it out, but sometimes it jumps right back into carat mode within a few dozen seconds. I am not randomly hitting F7 and if you look at all the bug reports you will see many related to people having been in carat mode when they thought they were not. Extensions I use: Gmail Manager Forecast Fox Plus Adblovk plus w/ filterset Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1.Open Firefox and several tabs 2.Sooner or later it will happen 3.Happens browsing my Gmail frequently 4. Happens when editing in a wiki often as well Again it is random but for me it is very frequent The problem is tab dependant and also randomly goes away wen reloading or clicking on links
It's not an issue with caret browsing; it's a focus issue where we somehow think we're not in the <input> but we really are. FWIW, I'd be interested to see if one of your extensions is causing this. Could you disable them for a week and see if you still hit this?

OS: Windows Server 2003 → Windows XP
Summary: Caret Browsing Randomly turns on in XP x64 → Find bar pops up when typing /s or 's in input fields on XP x64
Version: unspecified → 1.5.0.x Branch
I have this same problem intermittently. It is very annoying and closing the browser does not always fix it. It only happens with apostrophes and the slash on the question mark key.
I have unistalelled FF and deleted my old profile. I then reinstalled and am still having the same issues. I do not have this problem on Windows 2003 Server SP2 32 bit. It is not a focus issue. It happens while typing and you can still type a letter, you just cannot use /,' or arrows. I don't think it is the extensions either since I use the same ones on my 32 bit machines and do not have the problem. Of course it is possible that they are having issues with x64 instead of just FF. I'll disable them for a bit and see what happens. Can someone actually confirm this bug so people beleive it?
Find tool bar pops up when typing "1" or anything else in input (user name/password) fields on gmx.de or 1und1.de or other login procedures while a first Firefox window (or tab) is already open with an input template. Sometimes closing and reopening a second window helps, sometimes both windows must be closed before you can use the login dialogue without the Find tool bar popping up. Windows XP; Firefox new version: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; de; rv:1.8.0.7) Gecko/20060909 Firefox/1.5.0.7
For the cases that it happens in a new window, can we assume you're using a windows shortcut to open it, i.e. quicklaunch or desktop? Can you reproduce this bug when opening new firefox windows with ctrl+N or by using the New Window button? (can be added to the toolbar by going to view -> toolbars -> customize and dragging it on)
This bug was reported on Firefox 2.x or older, which is no longer supported and will not be receiving any more updates. I strongly suggest that you update to Firefox 3.6.3 or later, update your plugins (flash, adobe, etc.), and retest in a new profile. If you still see the issue with the updated Firefox, please post here. Otherwise, please close as RESOLVED > WORKSFORME http://www.mozilla.com http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Managing+profiles http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Safe+mode
No reply, INCOMPLETE. Please retest with Firefox 3.6.x or later and a new profile (http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Managing+profiles). If you continue to see this issue with the newest firefox and a new profile, then please comment on this bug.
