I thought Bug 6805 included the win9x OS's, but now it's listed as fixed and the OS is "other". One should be able to open a link in a new window with a middle mouse click. Opening a link in a new window is very frequently used, and it should be more convenient than the current right-click menu clicking. Why should the linux people get all the fun?
Already there. Put this line in your prefs.js or user.js pref("middlemouse.openNewWindow", true); and it should work. We made it non-default because too many windows people freaked out at a behavior they hadn't seen before. :-)

I'm so sorry to create this extra bug then. First time I go ahead and post a bug instead of asking in newsgroups, and this is what happens. Thanks :)
Don't feel bad -- it's better to post a bug that turns out to have been recently fixed, than not to post a bug and find out later that no one knew about it and so it never gets fixed. :-)
Any chance of adding this to the Mouse Wheel prefs? It kinda fits in there, at least for people for a mouse wheel. I guess it doesn't really for those with an actual three-button mouse. But then we could always change the category name to just "Mouse". (2am, too tired to file a new bug. Just for discussion, really.)
