User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-GB; rv:1.8.0.6) Gecko/20060728 Firefox/1.5.0.6 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-GB; rv:1.8.0.6) Gecko/20060728 Firefox/1.5.0.6 When you type in keywords in the location bar which is not in history and which is a non-URL, firefox attempts to do a google search. As a usability enhancement this should be indicated to the user, that he is about to perform a search. See attachment on how it is implemented in another browser. This also allows better visibility to this feature. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Open firefox. Type some non-URL keywords. For example "New York Times" 2. Press Go or <Enter> Actual Results: Firefox does a "I am lucky" google search and loads www.nytimes.com. Doesn't indicate to the user that it is going to do the search. Though it looks like the user should be knowing this, it is polished to inform the user the effects of his intentions. Expected Results: Show "Search For New York Times" in the location bar as soon as New York Times is detected to be a non-URL. See attachment for example.
I think a description of the automatic "I'm feeling lucky" search feature should be shown on the first time a user enters a non-URL. Then, if the user ticks a checkbox that says "Don't show this message again", the next time the user enters a non-URL, Firefox will not prompt again about it.

Additionally to my first comment, I think the notification message should be shown in a pop-up window. Also, this should be applied on all platforms and operating systems (change Platform to ALL and OS to ALL).
(In reply to comment #2) > I think a description of the automatic "I'm feeling lucky" search feature > should be shown on the first time a user enters a non-URL. I think you should cc yourself to bug 275957, which is that, rather than commenting on this bug, which is not, then.

This bug could be addressing the issue as in bug 275957, but the solutions for it are not same and not overlapping. I think the subtle "Search For ..." text prepended to the keywords that the user has typed is better and neccessary for the reasons, 1. The user always knows when the search is going to happen. 2. Isn't at all intrusive to the user. 3. Doesnt always need to be consciously reminded the distinction between a URL and non-URL, this gently reminds them. I will make a note of this bug in bug 275957 and lets see what others opinion are.
OS: Windows XP → All
Hardware: PC → All
cc'ng mconnor who commented on bug 275957 for his opinion on this one..
The problem is that this works once there's a space, but we will search in other cases which we can't determine in real time. i.e. if i type "mconnor" into the URL bar, that could be a local server, could be a name that Browse By Name will redirect, or it could be a search. Showing UI indicators of a potential action only some of the time makes it pretty suboptimal, IMO.
