User-Agent: Opera/9.01 (Windows NT 5.1; U; en) Build Identifier: Thunderbird version 2 alpha 1 (20060724) I subscribe to a number of newsgroups. When installing TB I like to set newsgroup views to something like view-tags-order ascending. I also move the tag filter to before the subject line on the pane layout. Unfortunately when changing these settings the settings are not universal and I have to go through changing the settings with every individual newsgroup - when you have lots of newsgroups this is a huge pain and a massive time waster. I would lke to be able to change a setting and have that setting universal for all groups. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Download newsgroups from server account, choose newsgroups to subscribe 2. change the view settings to view-tags-ascending for that newsgroup 3. switch to a new newsgroup and default settings remain so you have to change each newsgroup. Actual Results: well settings are not universal and I have to set each group individually. Expected Results: I would like to have universal settings across all groups. This problem occurs whichever view is used - whether it be tags or order received or date. I suspect this is not a bug, just simply a feature not yet implemented. Universal settings throughout each newsgroup would not only help current users change preferences easily, but would also lessen the stress of customisation for new users.
See bug 86845, where after years of inactivity is close to getting a patch in place. This doesn't do exactly what you want -- it only applies your default preferences to newly created groups -- but it's a start. I think it's unlikely that there will be a feature to automatically change the view of every newsgroup to match a change made in any group, just because there are cases where people want group-specific views. One possibility (following my idea at bug 86845 cmment 57) would be a menu item such as "Apply this view to all newgroups." However, that really is of limited use. However: assuming you know the view you want, it should be possible to make the changes across the board by setting the prefs from bug 86845, then deleting the .MSF files associated with all the newsgroups and restart. Those files will be rebuilt when the newsgroup is next viewed, and (I believe) the prefs will then be used to define the view for each group. > I also move the tag filter to before the subject line on the pane layout. You mean the tag column? Column order and size is perhaps the only aspect of folder views that *does* get applied to all folders; see bug 76702.
I can appreciate there are people who want settings on a per folder basis, so you are right, an idea could be when you set a view have an option to set it as global for newsgroups. However once set global, I would like the chance to then go and change the order for mail (my mail view preferences are opposite to my news preferences). I don't think this feature would be of limited use - its something which will take the pain away from setting up new groups upon a TB installation. Lack of view global customisation might lead to putting some people off especially if they sibscribe to alot of groups. With regards to the tag column remembering state, maybe I have hit another bug and it is not working for me. I shall have another play with it and see if it is actually okay.
You can set defaults by hidden prefs (grr...). I don't see any distinguishing characteristics from bug 86845, marking DUP.
