User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1b2) Gecko/20060821 Firefox/2.0b2
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1b2) Gecko/20060821 Firefox/2.0b2
Due to changes made in fixing Bug 315536 ("'do this automatically for files like this from now on' often grayed out"), as of FF2.0b2 - the 'Opening [filename]' dialog box has been revised - specifically in how it handles "application/octet-stream" files, I believe - and the wording of the box is now sometimes contradictory to the wording in the box, and the file-handling question posed to the user is sometimes improperly posed.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. As an example, go to http://www.mozilla.com/products/download.html?product=firefox-1.5.0.6&os=win&lang=en-US which is the Win32 Firefox .exe download (download attempts to begin on page load)
2. Take note of the wording used in the title of the dialog box ("Opening")
3. Take note of the wording used in the first line of text inside the dialog box ("You have chosen to open")
4. Take note of the wording of the last line of text inside the dialog box ("Would you like to save this file?").
5. Think about it.
6. Realize that we were told TWICE that this action was going to 'Open' a file, yet when it comes down to it, that is not an option: we are able to 'save', which is contradictory to everything the box told us it should do.
7. Additionally: Look again at the wording of the last line of text ("Would you like to save this file?") - and then look at the available options: ("[Save]" and "[Cancel]". Either the question, or the available choices for the answer are improper. The proper response to a "Would you like to?" phrase is a "YES, I'd like to (whatever)" or "NO, I wouldn't like to (whatever)" (or in this context, even a "hmm.. neither, I don't want to Save it, I don't want to Cancel - I want to Open it!") answer.
Expected Results:
While the dialog box title even in FF1.5.0.6 also said "Opening [filename]" for the same test-cases or similar files like it, the wording inside the box used to prompt "What should Firefox do with this file?" [Save to Disk]->[OK]/[Cancel]. At least the posed question and the given choice match grammatically.
Interestingly, and not surprisingly (in my opinion) - both Internet Explorer and Opera use a more accurate dialog box title for the described action: IE uses "File Download" while Opera uses "Download File". If a(any) file is being transferred from a server onto your computer, even if it's going to a temporary file so that it can be opened or streamed - it is 'downloaded' - so that is a better description and title to use. Firefox doesn't need to be different just for difference's sake, especially if it's wrong.
Compare the 3 screencaps below that show the dialog boxes for a download of the same aforementioned test-case file using different browsers.
1. Firefox 2.02b: http://img224.imageshack.us/img224/3276/screencapff202bopeningfiledialogkr6.jpg
2. IE 7: http://img164.imageshack.us/img164/2994/screencapie7filedownloaddialogij8.jpg
3. Opera 9.1: http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/4948/screencapoperadownloadfiledialogup0.jpg
Additionally, I know this is not the Bug thread for it, but when comparing the 3 dialog boxes, it is obvious that Firefox's file 'opening'(or 'downloading') options are, um... lacking (or should that be 'lagging', behind the others). Something to think about, perhaps?

Confirmed on Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1b2) Gecko/20060912 BonEcho/2.0b2
"Open" would be fine if it was showing the link and not saying "Which is a".
Though I don't see anything interesting, surprising or not, in that other browsers have better wording.
As for "lacking"/"lagging", executing programs is harmful, and I'd like the executing feature for sound/PDF only. Works with PDF, won't try with sound because of the plugins installed. OK, this paragraph is off-topic…
