I tried to test eBay-zh-CN.xml and couldn't because the existing eBay.xml in the en-US build causes the search service to emit an
_addEngineToStore: Duplicate engine found, aborting!
even if the eBay.xml is 'removed' in the UI.

Reporter: Can you give us a link to the search engine you were trying to add for testing?

This is a known problem, see bug 340331 (and bug 335102). This isn't likely to be fixed until bug 335102 is.
Depends on: 335102

Bug is present also in Fx3. Should "Version" be changed to "Trunk"?

I think a good solution is to prompt to rename search engine (indeed bug 335102 was added as blocking this bug).

10 years without simple fix? Wow…
Renaming shouldn't be exactly necessary to install search plugin with the name matching the name of the default plugin removed from UI. What's more, it should be technically possible to install two or more search plugins with the same text in <description>.

We don't support changing names of the default / allowing overwriting, in part so that users know these are the engines supplied with Firefox and are "safe". Generally though, the names shouldn't really be a big issue, since most of the time you're not actively looking at it.
In any case, I don't see us changing this without good reason, and there hasn't been huge demand for it over the years.
