User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1) Gecko/20060918 Firefox/2.0 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1) Gecko/20060918 Firefox/2.0 When Firefox blocks scripts from raising or lowering windows, there should be a yellow bar at the top saying something like "Firefox prevented this site from bringing a popup window to the foreground. [Allow www.foo.com to foreground windows]". Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Go http://www.quirksmode.org/js/popup.html 2. Click on the "open popup" link about 30% down the page 3. After the popup raises, click back to the main window and click "open popup" again Actual Results: Nothing happens (the popup is updated in the background, but not foregrounded). Expected Results: *Something* at least should happen. Either the window should popup as requested, or there should be some UI that tells the user that their action was blocked and allows them to override it. A temporary solution would be to make FF2's default settings allow scripts to raise and lower windows, like FF1.5 does.

How about allowing window.focus() at times when popups would be allowed (e.g. onclick)?

That sounds good to me. In fact, I like that better than the UI confirmation idea -- it would Just Work when users expect it to. Can this be fixed before FF2 goes out, I wonder? :-)

I filed bug 355482, "Allow window.focus (raise/lower windows) on other windows at times when popups are allowed". I recommend wontfix for this one: I don't need more visual clutter when a site tries to turn a popup into a popunder, and there would be no sane place to put such an indication if a background window tries to raise itself.
Summary: Need UI confirmation when scripts are prevented from raising/lowering windows → Need UI indication of when scripts are prevented from raising/lowering windows
Hi, newbie warning here. Ok, so window.focus is now disabled by default in Firefox? And a user must explicitly set to allow Javascript to raise/lower windows? If this isn't the intended "fix" (re: opposite, enabled by default, disabled explicitly by user), then ladies and gents, this bug isn't fixed. I'm on 2.0.0.3 and the setting is disabled by default...and causing a mighty stir in our user base. The natives are screaming "it's broken"..."it" to them means the web at large and/or this new "Firefox" thing we're introducing... And of course the Marketing folk are screaming about "fixing our web site"... Platform: Windows
